A Follow Up On That Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary Story

As you know I started a discussion about the deplorable conditions at the Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary in which it's owner, Linda Bruno had her placed raided by the Philadelphia SPCA last week. There were an estimated 600-700 cats at her sanctuary, most very sickly and many near death. She did not believe in euthansia when a cat became sick, instead allowed them to die "natural" death...even if it meant the cats were in terrible pain. An estimated 150 cats that had died were kept in freezers, until supposedly she could find places to bury them and already had perhaps hundreds buried on the property. You can see my original discussion here. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1438309.aspx?p=1 I got a rather "conflicting" email from the same Yahoo cat rescue group, indicating that this was a "witch-hunt" that in the 14 years of Tiger Ranch's operation that there had been no problems about the place and that the woman was genuinely compassionate about caring for cats that no one else wanted, not even shelters and would have been put down anyway (Quote) ..."I have inside information about what happened. I have been informed that it was the Philidelphia Society for the Prevention for Cruelty to Animals that sought the search warrant. There were two elderly cats that died natural deaths last Wednesday evening. For some reason Lin did not euthanize these two but believed natural death was better. I myself don't necessarily agree with that but I have friends that have let there pets die at home without any assistance. The "undercover" person filmed this and a warrant was obtained. They took everything - the sick and elderly have been euthanized and the bodies have been incinerated so there is now no evidence of the cat's true condition. Here is the real interesting part of it the Phili SPCA has the new cable contract for "Animal Cops." Apparently it was filmed in New York or somewhere that has been sued a number of times for the taking of animals - sucessfully sued in some cases and the show is no longer being filmed whereever it was previously done. Phili needs a big season opener. Need I say more? The Phili SPCA left baited traps there unchecked for days and left ferals without food for days. The county that Tiger Ranch is in the animal control people there stand behind Lin Marie and had no idea about this raid. Lin is now out of jail. Even her old dog Captain is in a county shelter and there is concern about him because he was protective of Lin and the sanctuary cats and people who know him are worried that he will snap at someone and be put down. There were of course animals in the freezer and buried on the property. This seems to have been a witch hunt. The Phili executive director's name I beleive is Howard (last name) and he is behind this. He is the one semi crying or crying on the video clips. Hopefully, there will be a web site put up for Lin providing more of her side of the story and an address to help send money for her defense. Also, I suggested writing the state's attorney there and reminding him that he is an elected official and what happened is a tragedy. I will post his name and address when I get it. The damage is already done. Whether Lin is vindicated in court or convicted her animals have been taken. Their life at the sanctuary is no more. Her cats, chickens, her goat and horses are gone. The horses had acers and acers of pasture. The goat was tethered to the side of a barn eating grass when the raid occurred. Hopefully her lawyer will obtain an emergency injunction to prevent any other animals being put down. Hopefully, this group will be held civilly liable for what they have done..." Now it just could be true that the undercover film crew only filmed sick cats to make it look like this was the conditions of all the cats...and as indicated in this email notice, the SPCA itself set traps for the feral cats, and THEY themselves did not attend to the cats right away resulting in those trapped cats starving to death... I was able to dig and find one website that shows an interview with Linda Bruno aka Lin Marie where she talks about the raid, etc and the cats taken...but then there is also the undercover video itself...In the one interview she states that she was on a "Christian mission" to save the cats http://kdka.com/local/Tiger.Ranch.Cat.2.679899.html One has to sift through a number of videos to get to all of them, including the undercover video of the sick cats So what's the real story here? Was this a "witch-hunt"?? Was the Philadelphia SPCA less then honest in its approach about this, including the idea that they themselves were responsible for the death of many cats by trapping cats and leaving them to die for so called evidence? Is this Linda Bruno justified in caring for cats no one else, not even shelters would take in and got overwhelmed by the numbers of cats? Or is she a glorified pet hoarder with her "Christian Mission" attitude...Watch the videos ...

Hi Pyewacket... I haven't been here in ages... sorry about that... long boring story. But when this post popped up in email I had to respond. In the Supporters of Winging Cat Rescue group on Care2 there is a discussion about this very topic going on. Those members of the group who live in the area of Tiger Ranch, have visited the place and actually know Linda, are totally behind her, as is Winging Cat Rescue and Last Chance For Animals, a group based in California whose mission is to STOP animal abuse. LCFA helped organize a rally for her and Tiger Ranch today. According to a Care2 friend who was there, around 100 people turned out in support of this woman and her sanctuary. If you or anyone else who is reading this is a member of Care2, please follow this link and read my "news to note" on this subject at http://www.care2.com/news/member/101011779/679146 and note it if you feel it worthy. I do believe this is a "witch hunt" and this brave, compassionate woman needs all the support she can get. Thank you. ~ CatAnna

But you do have to admit having 600-700 IS a bit much, no? I mean she said in the video interview that she felt it was her Christian mission to help these cats...and I don't necessarily agree that she should have left the cats to die naturally instead of euthanizing them...I mean if they were in pain, wouldn't that have been more humane?

I know there really are a lot of conflicts with this story...think it was totally wrong for instance to drag off her personal pets and horses/goats and chickens...what purpose did that serve??...but that isn't necessarily true about no-kill policies of shelters...many no-kill shelters do euthanize pets..there are just too many of them---actually many of my pet rescuer friends have told me the WORSE state for putting animals down, even at no-kill places is NJ

oh my what a lot of searching you have done and now with conflicting storys and finding out that they had set traps and didnt tend to the cats I think they need to be investcated. I am in hopes that all goes well for Lin. some people cant keep thier noses out of theings and she was just doing a good deed for the cat. Yup could have been a witch hunt!

I'm torn here. I read the original article and what all was said with it. I also know the SPCA isn't always necessarily the best source for what constitutes animal abuse. Sorry I've seen some go way to the extreme on it. Over all though it would be hard to mistake the numbers that the cops and the medical teams had reported they found there to the press. I cannot believe that the SPCA was able to convince all these people to support what they were saying if the evidence wasn't there to back them up especially after the raid. I think this might be one we will have to wait and see what happens in the up coming days. What evidence is revealed for both sides and what the law decides to do on the issue.

I think that is all we can do at this point. Wait and see what delelops. If you do hear more on this story please pass it on. I would like to know what happens. No matter what though I think it's the poor cats that have suffered, who ever is at fault. It's a shame that they had to go through it all.

There's obviously more to this story that meets the eye and I'll be interested to see more updates as time goes on. What I don't understand though, is why they took the other animals and what has happened to them? I'd also like to see more information about the way that she ran the place, how many people did she have helping and did she have at least one full time vet on site?

I know I can't understand why they took the other animals like the horses, a goat, and her personal dogs as well...what service did that do??...Supposedly she did have help and vet care, but I still think the number of cats she had was WAY too many, and yes, this will probably be a story that will continue for a long time--want to find out the outcome as well

I'm getting two really opposing viewpoints from people...on the one hand it was a set up and some pet rescuers are on her side, and other pet rescuers who view her as a glorified animal hoarder--yeesh

As often occurs, pyewacket, we may never really learn the truth in this situation, but I am well aware that many of the organizations that are put in place for the protection of others often overstep their bounds or abuse the very power they have been granted. I truly hope that this woman will be vindicated because I can think of no plausible reason for her to take in so many animals except for humane reasons.

Well I hope to keep track of this story...it would be interesting when the truth comes out, but still to my mind having 600-700 cats is still way too many at one place to deal with
