Probably used Adobe Photoshop, Imageready, GIMP or another photo editing software. They either took enough pictures and made the animation in photoshop, or they had a video, used video editing software and converted the frames into an animation image (or some other converter). Basically you take the frames or multiple photos, and then feed them into the photo editing software under their animation command. You have to save it as a .gif (and in plenty of cases you need to choose "Save for Web" to get it to work right). I'm guessing the file was so large that regular GIF optimization (downsizing, de-colorizin) still left the creator a large file. Therefore they just bit the bullet and went with grayscale. For a reference, here's GIMP's tutorial for advanced animation. http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Advanced_Animations/

You could use a video, that would be more accurate. Or you can take a few pictures of your face in different faces, and then try doing it from those images.

I never thought that a .jpg file can move like that. I know how to make .gif images, but .jpg that moves? That's kind of baffling.

This is an animated gif, which is simply several images played in rapid succession. the same principle applies to all animation, such as a video tape or DVD where you see several frames per second to create the sense of motion. You can create this type of display in numerous programs such as Adobe Premiere or Fireworks. You can also create a simple video and compress it accordingly.

i'm not sure, i'm still learning HTML coding, but i bet it has something to do with the "9iqlxv&s=3" in the tag. is there any way you can ask the person that created it?

There are two formats for pitcures JPEG and GIF. To do it you need to have adobe photo shop, format conversion software, and some animation coding to start with. You need to have knowledge of java also. GIF is copyrighted so that eliminates chances of yours. The best way to do that is try to animate or add some DHTML to it. If you are uncomfortable with those try to get some free copys and put it as your avatar. Because if you are able to do that you can actually become a designer, programmer or a software professional.

Its a black and white .gif file (renamed to .jpg for some odd reason) Properly made in Jasc Animation Shop or some similar program.

It is called .gif or in other words Graphics Interchange Format animation. Here is a link to create your own moving pictures. You don't need flash to do this. Here is a link http://picasion.com/
