Music or Lyrics?

Which is more important to you when you're listening to a band or new song? I'm more of a lyrics fan. Why? Well, I usually like to sing along to songs in the car, and I don't like the thought of singing something that doesn't make any sense. Also, I really like to write, poetry & prose, anything, so I'm rather critical of lyrics as a whole. They have to make sense. I don't like rhyming just for the sake of rhyming, it has to be meaningful. On the other hand, a song as to be somewhat energetic for me to listen to it consistently. Life's depressing enough without a song bringing me down, haha. So what do you think? Lyrics or music?

I'm going for lyrics as opposed to music because most music can be very similar, but it's the words that make a song. I like a song to have meaning, and that can't be done with music alone... words are the core. Brightest Blessings.

I agree with myklj (might have mistyped that, if so, sorry) in that classical & jazz tunes can have a lot of meaning without words, but those genres are ones that I have to be in a mood to listen to. I'm terribly bad for singing along, even when I don't realize I'm doing it, so it's better to have words to work with. Thanks for the response.

Maybe so, but I can't get into jazz at all... it seems to stir some emotion in me which I'm not keen on. There are quite a few classical pieces that I really love, and agree, they can be beautiful without words. I love Mozart and Bach, especially, and listen to classical music quite often. Music on its own, is fine, but I still think lyrics are important, in lots of cases. They add meaning to a song.. they tell a story, and although I listen to wordless music when I need to chill or relax, I still think lyrics are very important. Brightest Blessings.

same is the case with me...i write poetry so am very choosy about lyrics..and i am learning music as well...so that also is important..a song is incomplete without both...its like you ask, whats more important in food, salt or pepper..both are equally important... or a better example....its like a pizza where sauce and cheese both play a role...you can think of pizza without both...(and toppings as well ;) so i would say both are equally important one cant negate any of these...but you can like a song for either its lyrics or its music...yet with one another will follow... Have you ever wondered most of the times if you like a song for its lyrics you somehow start liking the music..and if you like a song's music you start liking the lyrics as well... so you either like a song or dont like it..there is no middle way here...because music and poetry are soulmates :) i have a poem written on this...will share next time... have a good day....

Thanks for the well thought out post. I agree that both are important, it just depends on the genre as to which one I pay more attention to initially. I definitely get the pizza example, thanks for sharing that as well. :D

both music and lyrics are an integral part of the songs. so while you are listening to a song you are not only listening to the music but also to the lyrics. but certain songs they have hardly and audible lyrics.... but there the sounds and the music does the trick. well then for me both are important but that too depends on the song.

I go for the lyrics as well...I can relay easily when the lyrics I am singing have some sense in it. I love to sing and I really love music a lot. It would be nice to hear something with a sense. It's like talking to a person that have a sense and meaning in what he or she is saying.

I really enjoy instrumental music - not necessarily "classical" music - even hip hop has some good instrumental songs. I also pay attention to the lyrics - if I don't like the lyrics, I won't listen to it. rhyming for the sake of rhyming is horrible...so I agree with you on that one! I actually like depressing music though. It doesn't make me feel depressed - just very calm.

If the music's good one can get really hooked on. But for how long??? That is when the lyrics come to play. If the Lyrics are good you hum the song for a lifetime. Must say there is no substitute for each of the aspects individually. What about Melody. Some songs are so catchy & melodious. Sometimes just the ambience music & words create. The synergic effect can be telling. Here's when you really can't tell what's better. Very tough to make up one's mind ....... Music or Lyrics? umh.... Maybe Lyrics have the edge.... Many a times simplicity in both can captivate you. Also a lot depends on the mood one is in. That was a really tough question!

I have always like the music first myself. Lyrics I learn later. To me music is the whole reason for listining to songs.

I'm a songwriter too so I can relate to how you feel about lyrics. But I don't know if I could choose lyrics over music since they both go hand in hand for me. Music and lyrics is like food and water to me. They're both important and without the other, it wouldn't be as complete. Perhaps if I had to choose, I would choose music over lyrics because I can hear a melody or a beat and be truly immersed in the music, but if I hear lyrics without a melody, it doesn't do the same for me.

For me it depends on the genre of the song. I like most dance type songs, but a lot of times the words are either silly or senseless. But when it comes to most other genre (except rap, which I don't really get into much) its all about the lyrics. My hubby is all about the music itself and he doesn't pay much attention to the lyrics and I tell him all the time that he's missing out so much. He would really appreciate songs more if he pay attention to the lyrics. Music has always been one of my outlets and without the lyrics it could never of helped me through what it has.

Maybe I pay more attention to the music. Different people get different tastes from a music. Reguardless of the lyrics, you may also enjoy the music very well. Or you can even add lyrics by yourself according to the music.

I like to to see and hear the lyrics than the music. Lyrics is the first thing that catches my attention and it is what I mostly appreciates in a song. For me, if the song has a good lyrics, something that I can relate to it, I would love that song. I don't care if it is too slow or too fast song, it can be rock, hip-hop, mellow, etc. as long as it has a good lyrics, then it is good for me.

Firstly the music has to catch my ear....if that happens i want to listen to the lyrics...usually i will go for chirpy lyrics...sad ones just actually depress me!!!! So I like happy tunes with catchy lyrics!!

Well in my opinion it is the music. I don't even have to understand it, it just has to have a good vibe to me. I say this because i love to listen to french music but have no idea of what they are saying.

I guess my answer would be both. I'm very picky with the lyrics as well, that is why certain genres of music never appealed to me. But I also immensely enjoy listening to classical piano or just plain old orchestra (especially when I'm reading or writing, as lyrics can be quite distracting in this case). While lyrics represent the more "tangible" side, I believe the instrumental presents the illusive and "feeling" side.
