I'm a girl, so i can not answer your question as you asked. But i can tell you what my boyfriend buy me for my birthday. He had bought me chocolates, a nice watch, a digital camera since we have been together, and of course every year i'll receive a big bunch of red roses, and that really makes me feel happy. Last year he came to my city(we are not in the same city) and we went travelling together, it was the best birthday i've ever had. So you can try that, i'm sure your girlfriend will like that.
