I bought an external hard disk about 4 months ago and have been using it a lot. It is portable and i am carrying it where ever i go. Now the cable port has become loose and the connection goes off easily. Once i lost my entire external disk data due to this. It showed that the disk is unreadable and i lost the data and i had to format the disk. It used to give copying problems before. Now i have changed the cable and its working fine. How often do you think i should change it.

I have never had to change the cable of my USB cable and I have been using my external hard disk and cable for more than a year already. Seems like you have been going through rough places while carrying your hard disk and cable.. Probably one way is to keep your cable in a separate protective case and that would help save on having to purchase new cable everytime...

I can't really tell you when to change the cable but Thought I might offer this bit of advice on using your USB port. My wife bought a used computer and the USB connection on the front was a little worn. What I did was to install a USB cable that had a female end on it, an extension, and Now I plug into the extension instead of the original USB port. It has saved many a headache. beamer23

I have not encountered this problem before because I normally have fixed USB connections and rarely use a mobile disk in that way. It is simply bad luck that the cable became worn and something that you cannot predict very well. Your next cable could last for years or get damaged the first time by accident, so you will have to wait to see if or when it occurs.

if the port on the drive is bad the nothing you do to about the cable will fix the problem. When traveling with my portable I always keep a spare cable in my bag.
