Money is in the list

Have you seen this all over the internet? Do you believe this is true? I've been thinking, almost everyone who is on a list is also someone who is trying to make money on the internet and they have signed up to a list because the list owner offered something in exchange for their opting in to their list. Now, the way I see it if this list building keeps on, eventually everyone will be on everyones list, and they will ultimately become useless, because everyone is trying to sell something to their list and probably the people on his list will be trying to sell hin something back. Maybe I'm wrong, but I view this list building as kind of overrated.

I am currently trying to build my "list" to see if it is possible to make money from it. I am a member of quite a few lists myself, from sites I've joined or products I've bought, and any time a new product is released I tend to get at least half a dozen emails from various people promoting the new launch. I think, if you plan to make money from your list, you'll need to offer something different from the same old stuff going around. Perhaps by building it, and only offering products you've created/had created for you?

I guess that could be an option, but I still think list members will be getting mails from a lot of people offering the same or at least similar products and they probably don't even open these emails anyway.

One thing I tend to wonder when I get a whole bunch of emails from a number of different people promoting the same new product, frequently within minutes of each other, is "Have these people even bought or tried this product themselves?"
