Don't Read This! It Isn't About Gun Control!

Actually, yes it is. I have very strong views on this issue, and I'm tired of having to come up with an answer every time someone asks, so I'm creating this discussion as an answer to all. The more our government "protects" us, the fewer freedoms and rights we have. If our government offers to "protect" us from criminals by taking away our guns, we have not only lost one of our main rights, we have also just given up one of our freedoms. We are slowly becoming the mouse in the cage. IF THE GOVERNMENT TAKES AWAY OUR GUNS, THEN ONLY CRIMINALS AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL HAVE GUNS. Do you really trust your government that much? I have read so many discussions on the subject of freedom, and others on the subject of gun control. The question has been asked regarding having personal freedom and struggling to have needs/wants met, or living in a tower, being given everything you need/want but having no personal freedoms. Every single person answered "personal freedoms". Well, if you give up your guns and all your neighbors do the same, how the hell do you expect to KEEP your personal freedoms? If you let the government take your personal protection away from you with the expectation that they will protect you, how soon will martial law follow? Very quickly, I think. The US government has protected it's own soldiers amazingly well, sending them off to war in a place the US government has no business being in the first place. Don't you think that they would protect you the same way? Or maybe a little bit better, since you aren't a soldier? You keep right on thinking that. Giving up your personal protection in exchange for the government to do it for you is exactly the same as living in that tower. You have all of your needs met. You have some of your wants met. You are in danger of nothing. But you can't do anything on your own without specific permission. The ones "protecting" you are the only ones you need to fear. So let me pose this to you, and let's put our "wants" aside for a moment: You are given everything you need (food, shelter, water, clothing) but you cannot even take your child for a walk without special permission. You live in a tower, some of your wants are met, you have to be careful what you say and who you say it to. You are little more than a laboratory animal in a cage. However, one day you see a rat darting in and out of the electrified hedges bordering the river around your tower. You never imagined that you could be jealous of a rat, but here you are thinking, "That rat is lucky. He can come and go, eat and play and sleep, all when he chooses himself. I chose to let my government take over, so that I and my family could be 'properly protected'. And now what? I feel lower than a rat." If you live in a tower where most of your needs and some of your wants are met, how is this different than regular life? The only difference is that you are no longer free. Why on earth would you give up all of your personal freedoms in exchange for the same needs/wants ratio you already have? What would possess people to think that giving up guns is "safer" than letting everyone have one? Study after study has shown that where guns are owned by law-abiding citizens crime rates are lower. Where guns have been banned, crime rates have skyrocketed. IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE OWNING A GUN YOURSELF, FINE. BUT DON'T YOU DARE TELL ME I CAN'T HAVE MINE! "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." ~Voltaire. If you turn it around a bit, "I may not agree with your decision to not own a gun, but I will defend to the death with my gun your right not to have one." Or even for the more conscientious folks who don't want a gun but don't care if others have them, "I may not agree with your decision to own guns, but I will defend to the death your right to do it anyway." So in conclusion, I say again: If your government outlaws guns, then only the outlaws and the government will have guns. Do you really trust your government that much?

Aw come on, let them ban them. Then the market for the medieval armor & weapons I make will skyrocket. I'll make a killing & be able to open my own combat weapons school. Before long we'll be able to tell exactly who all these bleating sheep are as they'll be the only ones without armor. The criminals will target them & we'll be rid of them in no time.

Anyone who has studied history could point out several times when outlawing weapons didn't work. Good example, remember Braveheart, they weren't allowed to have weapons either.

PS: Disarming the citizens is what caused Hitler to get away with his reign of terror for so long. If you know any halocaust (sp?) survivors, ask them. They will tell you that's absolutely true.

A-FRICKIN-MEN!!! I voted for Ron Paul myself! Well, in the primaries anyway. If he doesn't make it to the final one, I'm writing him in! Thanks for the praise, too, much appreciated!

Amen! That was very well said. I do want to add that our right to bear arms is to protect us from the very government that is trying to take them!
