A hero is someone willing to look beyond self limitations in order to help others. A hero can be a fireman or an officer, even an animal, or just your average Joe. They give selflessly in order to better the lives of others. A hero is someone whom lifts you up when you have fallen, someone to look up to, a mentor, a teacher, or even a counselor. It is also about overcoming obstacles, not just for ones own sake, but for the sake of others. It is about knowing when to stand up and knowing when to back away for perspective. It is about responsibility. A hero is anyone, or anything, that steps outside the boundaries of self limitation and fear and helps others to overcome hardships and suffering at risk to self.
I don't really have just one hero. I consider all of those whom have stood up for their ideals and beliefs to be heroes. My teachers and mentors are also my heroes because they have tread the path before me. Those whom labored for the things they value, those doing so now and those whom have gone before us, these too are my heroes.

I consider my boyfriends dad a hero. He fought in Vietnam, came back and married, he got a job with the Army Corp of Engineers taking care of the dams.. he was married for 25 years and was diagnosed with cancer June of 2006. He passed away in January of 2007, he was in remission from the cancer and had a stroke. His body couldnt handle the stress and he passed. He was a great person and I admire him very much.

I am sorry for your loss sweetie. My father was a Marine in Viet Nam. I wasn't blessed to have been raised by him, long story. I am just getting to know him and it is wonderful. He is currently a police officer in Texas.
I agree, the soldiers are most definately heroes. They fight for thier beliefs, for their families, for their country.
Many had a difficult time settling back in to the "norm". Your boyfriend's dad was obviously a strong man. It is terrible what stress can do to a person. It most certainly can kill you. To have endured something as terrible as cancer and then have that occur. I know it had to be devastating.
May the blessings you recieved knowing him endure in your hearts forever.
