What is the Purpose of the war we're STILL in?

I thought the purpose of the War in Iraq was to find "weapons of mass destruction"...Well, it's already been established that there are no weapons of mass destruction. So why are the troops still over there, and MORE being sent over.
Why is it costing the U.S. 2 billion dollars to keep a war going, when according to news reports, troops over there in Iraq don't know why or what they're fighting?
Bush says that it's going to take a little longer for the benefits of the war to kick in. I think he just doesn't want to admit he's wrong and take the blame for thousands of troops dieing in vain.
So does anyone understand this war? If so, could you explain it to me?

We went into the war for the reason stated by rita, but we are still there because:
1. The oil.
2. We destroyed the government that was there, so if we left there right now, it would probably fall into the same style of government as there was before we went in.
3. The U.N. has basically said it is our governments mess, so we should clean it up. (Not word for word)
