time to stand your eggs!

We are now about 2 days into the vernal equinox, which began Thursday. Did you know that you can balance an egg on end and it will stay that way? No, not a hard boiled or hollowed-out egg and not that old bar trick with a little pile of salt. Just a plain old raw egg either room temperature or right out of the refrigerator. If you balance an egg on one end on a clean, dry, level surface like a counter or table it will actually stay that way. I know....that's supposed to be an old wife's tale and the equinox, when the sun passes directly over the equator, is scientifically only a sign that days and nights are of equal length, but guess what...it works! I do it every year just for fun. I had some of them stand up to a week. It amazes the kids. We have even done it for the autumnal equinox and winter solstice just to see if it will work. It does. I used to have some pictures of the ones I did the first year but can't find them now. Have you ever tried it?

I've never tried it before. Because this is the first time I've heard about it. What's the scientific explanation behind this? I'm quite curious. I'm willing to try this out. I hope it works, or else I'll look like a fool in front of my parents. lol! Where did you learn about this? How long ago?

I heard about this on the radio some 10-15 years ago. Tried it and was astounded that it worked. You might want to try it tonight, before you do it in front of your parents. Just make sure the surface is level or it won't work. Science has no explanation for this other than maybe the earth is in perfect balance at that time. My daughter lives in Tx and said she has already done hers a day or two ago.

Yes, you're right. I should try it out first before I make a performance infront of my parents. They'll think they're seeing a miracle. Thank you for this discussion. It gave me something interesting to do, and something to think about. This would make as a good research in high school. Too bad I'm already in college. hehe. But I'll try to find it out. Maybe the answer is just out there.

Great! At least people will know I'm not some lunatic. You will have to put the pics in your photo page and direct folks to it unless you start a new discussion with one of them. We both can't post a picture in a reply until we reach 500 posts, darn it. Happy Easter.
