Seemingly universal appeal - what movies to you feel may have this.

I really do not have a lot in common with the people I work with, most of them are substantially younger then I am, and besides the generation gap, several of them are from other countries. Well, I am in my mid 50's, well educated and I work in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. The evenings are usually quiet as the guys get meds and setttle down for bed. So the TV goes on. I expected to be put the Sound of Music on and get if not some push back, some teasing about my age. But much to my surprise, the 22 Year old black mail who was raised in the inner city was not only watching it, but singing the songs during commercials and tonight the 60 year plus Jamaican woman was watching it too...saying it is among her favorite movies. Does this surprise you? It does me! What other movies do you think would appeal to so many people?

I hope you had a Happy Easter as well. I have not ever heard of 'The Water Horse". I like a whole lot of the kids films as well, we have a bunch of them to watch and we have no kids in that age group, and as far as we know, no grandchildren on the way yet. What amazed me is this seem to transcend the cultural gap as well.

The water horse is supposed to be how the loch Ness monster came into being , It is set in Scotland and as we live in Central Scotland I was really curious xx

In a way it's a bit surprising but when it really comes down to it the older movies were made well with life messages and if they're shown to our current generation they seem to get it...I turned 50 in February and have been trying to get my husband to watch the Sound of Music with me for many a year; he doesn't like musicals of any sort. I've told him that it's nothing like he'd think that a normal musical would be but I still can't break him down. Perhaps one day, soon...

Believe it or not I watch every single thing he want to watch; even sports...I do enjoy sports, though. I just don't think it's too much to ask once in awhile to reciprocate...lol

Are there movies that you don't like? Maybe you can make a deal with him, you watch one of his and he watches one of yours. My ex hated musicals, plays everything. From the time my son was little, I took him to plays and musicals. Now at 21, whenever he gets a chance, he is more then willing to go out to a play. This year was our first Christmas together in several years (He is in the Navy) and we got as much of the family together as we could and all the kids (well ages 20-25) loved the dinner theater that we go to.

I think that the Sound of Music is a movie that has it all. Songs that are memorable, romance, battle between good and evil, and Maria finding what she is truly good at doing. I think any movie that has a good plot without a lot of violence and bad language can have universal appeal and be enduring.

You are right and there are the little subplots and the suspense...at the festival, in the cemetery, the young Rolf - so handsome yet sucked into the Nazi mentality. And Edelweiss...what a beautiful song, truly endures time.

The Sound of Music is a great movie but it does surprise me a bit that its appeal is that universal. I tend to think of big action movies when I think of international appeal. Those are the ones that make big money and get the mass audiences. Probably because the dialog/language isn't so important..it's all about the stunts and such...like Stallone, Chan, and Schwarzenegger films. I also think of children's movies being universal...the many Disney films and also the Wizard of Oz.

Yes, it did surprise me, a 22 year old male who normally watches Karate shows, grappling and similar action movie to be singing those songs...really sent my head spinning. Most of the disney films, yes...the Wizard of Oz...no...I know a lot of people who did not like it.

It does surprise me since I could never get my older kids to watch it and I'm sure the younger one at home now wouldn't stay very long. I would think a movie like West Side Story had more appeal to the younger generation. Maybe you have some sensitive, caring individuals working at your place and that sort of movie would really appeal to them? \Anyway, I'm sure it was an enjoyable night... ...whit

I did not consider that, and my son, I must admit I had a hard time getting him to watch "the sound of music" until one day he came in during the cemetery scene. Then he sat down to watch the whole thing the next time it was on.

That is really cool! I love it when all generations of people can enjoy the same thing. I think 'The Wizard of Oz' has the same effect. I've seen people watch that together who you wouldn't think would be interested. But it seems most people have seen it, and most of them don't mind seeing it again.
