Hi, I have never been to Alaska but I am planning to do a Baha'i Year of Service there. I was just wondering if anyone had any advie for me. Anything I should know about living there. I know it is very cold, any advice on surviving the cold? I live on a mountain in Maine so I have experienced -20 but I think that is as cold as it has gotten here and that is rare.

Alaska is awesome, enjoy the beautiful scenery every chance you get. The winters are cold! You will need some good warm boots, snowpants, a down coat, heavy mittens and some thermal underwear. Be mentally prepared for the fact that there are only a few hours of dim light during the winter days. You'll need some hobby materials to keep you occupied and keep your brain active. The summers are beautiful, they can be kind of rainy so be sure you also have some rain gear and good mosquito spray are a must. In the summer you only get a few hours of night time, and even then it doesn't get completely dark so you may want to consider a sleeping mask so you can rest more comfortably. The summer days are generally fairly warm and a few days can be hot, so normal summer clothing is appropriate, along with a light jacket.

Thank you for your response and for the advice. I do not have to worry about keeping busy though, I am doing a service project there which will keep me occupied, as it requires a lot of planning. Thanks again for the response!

I hope that you enjoy moving to Alaska and living a year there. I haven't been there yet. I suggest taking warm clothing, some of your favorite snacks for your first week there, some family photos and your address book so that you can stay in contact with people. I saw a documentary about a father of 65 and a son of 30 going kayaking there. They set off but as they traveled down the river they saw ice and this was in June! Sadly they capsized in the fast running freezing cold water. They lost their kayak and all their things. All the son had was a lighter so he got a fire going. They had the worry of bears attacking them. Luckily the son went walking and a plane flew over. He signaled distress and the pilot helped him by rescuing him and his father. It looked like a beautiful landscape and I think tourists go there for adventure. There is meant to be a tree house and they can stay in that out in the wilds.

Thank you for your response. I will definitely want warm clothing! Good idea about the address book too, I didn't think of that.
