How can one address mental health issues at a university? How does one destigmatize mental illness?

The best way to address these things is via education. I think one of the best approaches would be to find some brochures about mental health and place them in in an accessible place. Try to find brochures that are non threatening... avoid titles like 'do you have a mental illness?' and go for something like, 'Is life getting you down?' Make sure the brochure explains that it's okay struggle emotionally. That most mental illness is caused by a chemical imbalance rather than emotional weakness on the part of the person feeling it. if you can't find a brochure like that then do some research and create your own. Take the completed brochure to campus admin and ask them to photocopy it for you. You could then place it in a holder in the toilet cubicles perhaps. That way, no-one would see people take one so they won't be teased. They can pop it in their pocket or bag. Have a phone number on the back for the campus counselling service (or an outside counselling service in case students are too afraid of being seen going to campus counsellors) You could also approach the teaching staff and encourage them to create a compulsory workshop for all students regarding mental health. You could even organize a brochure for parents on how to recognize the symptoms of mental illness in their children. It's a tricky situation to deal with but there are ways to do it in a non threatening way... the answer is EDUCATION!
