Drive-In Theater

United States

How many of you still have drive in theaters in your town or in a town nearby? I was shocked when I realized how far some people travel to go to a drive in theater. We have one only twenty minutes away and I have to admit, it's one of the things that we look forward to most in the summer, the privacy of the car, the comfort, the warm weather, the awesome drive in food and the low prices. It's the ideal time for a summer night. So, how many of you have drive in theaters and if not, why did they close down? ?

In my country there are no drive in theathre as far as I know. It is not too common here. I saw in the movie that you have a drive in theathre in your country and I wish we do have it here. Long time a go people watched movies in a big screen in a field or other outdoor area and people watched it sitting on the grass and this theathre is moving around from one village to another village which people were look forward for it. I never experienced this kind of theathre, I only heard it from my parents. It's called "Layar Tancap". I think maybe it's about the same like drive in theathre, only we don't watched from a car..

You'd think they'd start something like that because it's brings in enormous amounts of money in the warm months! Especially if they moved it around the way that you are talking because that would be a huge attraction!

The last place I lived there was one right down the road. We have 3 or 4 around. My daughters boyfriend is from New Orleans. He says there are none in the area where he is from. They have this dream of moving there and opening one up. They are a lot of fun.

We still have one about 20-25 minutes away. It's probably been about 10 or 12 years since I've gone to the drive-in though. I just remember the last time we went it was hot and we had the windows down and we got eaten alive by mosquitoes. I used to love the drive-ins as a kid though and it was a really good deal when you had a carful of people and they charged by the car. We'd all pile in and stay for the double feature although us kids usually fell asleep before the second film started :)

They used to charge by the car here and now they wised up and charge by the person (although some people just hide their friends in the trunk). A good solution for that mosquito problem is to bring citronella candles with you, thats what we do.

when I went to the drive-in back in the 50s and 60 we were charged by the person unless they were under 12. I remember different people trying to sneak in in the trunks of their cars. I don't think that very many got away with it.

I do not think there are any drive-in theaters within 50 miles of me! If there is, I just do not know about it! I like cable movies so much better!

Well the fact that I watch the movies in my house, with nobody but my family and a friend once in a while! It does not cost extra, and I can record it and play it back when i want to! Also, I need the closed-caption and do not see that when going to movie theaters or drive-ins!

There used to be a drive in theater close to where u used to live. I only went there once and it didnt really seem to have the same feel as shown in those old movies. Eventually the drive in theater was turned into some sort of strip mall. I dont really think that there is any place for them today with theaters and everything.

They are so much less expensive than theaters and they are a slice of America!! You can't just go everywhere and see a drive in theater, that's why they are so unique!

oh,I got it.We have movie similar to Drive-Theater,people watch movie in an open field sitting in their own wooden stool brought from their own home. And we can buy melon seeds and drink there. It was so much fun.But that was long time ago when I was a little kid.Now most people would rather sit in their couch watching TV.

A drive in theater is a movie theater that is basically in the middle of a field. There are huge screens and the movies are projected on to them. You watch the movie from the comfort of your own car, which you park your car in the field with everyone else and you turn your radio to the station they tell you and the sound of the movie comes across your radio. They have a concession building and great food. It's an amazing treat in the summer.

We had one up until a few years ago. It's now a Home Depot The closest one around I believe is over an hour drive from us. I haven't gone to one for years because of it. I used to love going to the drive-in. It was far more enjoyable then regular theaters and I could bring in my own food. It was a lot of fun. I wish they would come back again.

We have a drive in theater somewhere either in Manitoba or Saskatchewan, and I think it is near the Trans Canada highway, but we have never been there, mainly because our winters are so long and when summer comes, it stays light for so long that the only time you can watch it is in the winter when it is too cold, or in the summer if you want to watch adult type stuff. When I was a teenager, I used to get invited to go to one with my step sister and the guy she was going out with, but that was back in British Columbia, and there was a few times after that, but I have not been to any since then.

There were never any here. I guess maybe it is because it is far to light during summernights here. I always think it looks great when I see it in movies.

Such fond memories of drive in theatres in my youth - yes, we have a two screened drive in about 15 minutes drive from here, and it still proves to be very popular. though you no longer have the poles with speakers on them that you takethe little box and put it in your car - but instead you rely on your am radio channels - wonder what will happen when the fdc regulations do away with radio wave usage.

we just lost ours a couple of years ago.it would shut down in winter, and the local kids kept setting fire to the screens.the owner finally had had enough and sold the land to be condos. it's a shame, but i can't blame her with $5000 in repairs each time.

Such a shame that one person will ruin it for everyone. They are so nice for the community.

We don't have a drive in here. I know my parents use to talk about a drive in that they use to go to when they were growing up and they are in their 50's now so that may have been the last one around. We are lucky they still have putt putt around here. There isn't much to do around here. I always see people on tv go to this place or that to do cool things but here in New Orleans we don't have alot of things offered to us. I would love to move but my family is here and family is too important to me.

I used to love going to the drive-in Angel3yes! When my kids were growing up we would be there every weekend. Now there are very few drive ins left in my area. The increase in the crime rate was largely responsible for the demise of them along with the introduction into the home of VCRs and DVD players.

I think I have only been to the drive in once in my life. There are hardly any around here. I think we have one that is like an hour away. I guess I just never thought it was worth it to drive that far for a movie. :) Maybe one day I will try but probably not anytime soon.

I miss the drive in theaters. I remember watching the original star wars trilogy at the drive in. I think nowadays people want comfort and convenience rather than the experience.

I still think it's much more comfortable to be able to sit in my own car than a movie theater full of people! Plus, it's twelve dollars to go to the movie theater in our town and only five dollars for the drive in's so it's a way better deal.

We are some of the lucky ones - we have a working drive-in only 25 minutes from the house. It's more of a family thing now though compared to the teenager make-out festivals of my 70's high school era.

Ours has turned into more of a family thing too. You can see the little kids playing ball near the screens before the movies start.

I only need to travel across town to get to the drivi-in. I do not go very often because tons of unruly familys go and they are distracting when I'm trying to watch the movie. They are there by the car, truc and van loads. Seems as if they pack up ever child in a neighborhood and bring along grandmas, grandpas, the dog and who knows what else. There are tents, lawn or camp chairs, frisbees and flash lights. I do not enjoy the frenzy so I limit my visits so that familes can enjoy their family outting in peace.

Yeah, a lot of people around here bring their whole family including animals and such. I'm always wondering when I'm going to walk to the concession stand and pick up a surprise on my shoe on my way back, that would just ruin the movie, smelling that the whole time. The thing that is terrible is when people are inconsiderate and sit on top of their cars and such when they have people parked behind them, that drives me nuts!

I have one within, oh, 5 miles of me and a couple more that are a bit further drive, but not real far from me. I went last Thursday with friends to see a couple of movies. We had a great time.

I just went this weeked too and had a blast. It's so much fun to just get out for a night and still be able to relax in your own car so you are able to control the sound, atmosphere and such. So much more relaxing than a movie theater if you ask me!

Yes, we have a drive-in about 15 minutes from our house. I love going there, because the prices are really cheap, and the food is actually REALLY good. Our theater always has 2 movies every night, and sometimes 3 if they are doing a special. You pay around $7 to see those 2 or 3 movies, and then food is like a $1.25 for a burger, and $1 for fries. It's great, and they also have a playground, so it's good for the kids that are antsy and can't sit still through an entire movie. The last time I went to the drive-in we saw the last Harry Potter movie that just came out, I can't remember which one it was. They were also playing 1408. It was really creepy to watch 1408 outside in the dark like that, so it made the movie even better for me.

Thanks for "reminding" me that drive-in theaters still exist. I check my local business and find one. Drive-in is more of a legacy of the 50's, when cars became more popular and land was still cheap. Nowadays people can watch movies at their home theaters. However, some movies are better watched with a crowd. Good to hear that people are willing to drive for a long distance to watch movies in a drive-in. Those theaters offer another unique movies experience.

Oh yeah, they are wildly popular near us. It's a great way to get out and not be cooped up in a movie theater! I would prefer the drive in to a normal movie theater any day.
