Does anyone else like to take random roadtrips?

We love to take random trips, without any destination. Whenever we get a chance to get away, we'll jump in the van and roll a dice to decide what direction to go. We'll drive on an interstate over night, then the next morning wherever we are, we'll roll the dice again to decide which direction to follow that day. We've found some pretty neat places using this method. We drive a van on these trips so we can always just pull over along the road somewhere to sleep. How do you plan your trips? Or are you like us, no planning at all? Do you think you would be willing to travel without a plan?

There is nothing batter than heading out on the open road. As a delivery driver for a local business I still get to enjoy the open road on a pretty regular basis. But with gas nearing $4.00 a gallon, I have cut back on my independent wander lust. I do have a road trip in mind for the future. Here's a link if your interested: http://wikitravel.org/en/Route_66

Thanks Scooter! We've travelled bits and pieces of Route 66 (or what's left of it) but never the entire thing. I think that would be a great trip. I know what you mean about the fuel prices! We drive a Sprinter van that has a diesel engine so we're currently paying $4.19 for diesel fuel. Thankfully it does get 21-22 MPG so that helps. Still, we have also cut back on some of our random travels - but not completely.... Thanks for commenting, and Happy Travels!

I'm not a big fan of the Sprinter Van myself. We have a few at work. They are like a sail in high winds. LOL Luckily I get to drive a Chevy van that runs on unleaded fuel. Happy travels to you as well.

Most of our local and/or closer trips are these type. I love to get in the car and head out with no real destination. So much fun. I love the idea of rolling the dice. You never know what you're gonna get..... We do have major plans for later, but for now, our trips are with no plans in mind - just go and see where we end up. Sometimes, we set out with a full tank of gas and just drive, stopping in little out of the way places as we go. When the tank is half full, we turn around and come back. Much like the dice game. I love to travel without plans - just get in the car and go....

I'm glad to know we're not the only ones that do this. Most of our family thinks we're crazy to travel without plans. We think it's a lot more fun that way! Thanks for your reply!

Oh heck honey, I don't give a hoot what anybody else thinks about the things I do. Doing things on such a spur of the moment is what keeps things in life so interesting. You only live once - enjoy it and don't give a heck what anybody thinks. I heard about a lady who just celebrated her 114th birthday. When asked what her secret was she said, "I spend the first 6 months of the year minding my own business, the other 6 months staying out of people's way".... You gotta love it!

I love to take trips like this, but with gas pushing $4/gallon here in NW Florida, all I do is go to work and come home. I don't even like to go to the store unless I absolutely have to. I usually try to schedule my shopping stops on my way home from work. I will not make a special trip to the store unless I have no other choice, and even then, I ride my bicycle to the Dollar General up the street if it is feasible for me to do so.

We have done that several times only the difference is we don't bring cars. We just take a bus and go to any place without any plan. So upon reaching the place, we don't know where we are and where we are headed. We don't know what places to visit and where to stay. And that's the fun part of it...the excitement of going to unfamiliar places. You don't know what to expect and how to maximize the fun while staying there.

That would be fun to go on a bus too, then someone else can worry about the driving. Unfortunately, there are no busses any where near to where we live so we must drive. Thanks for responding!

I wish I had the money to take random road trips. I like going to new, or favorite, places with family and friends. If I could get my best friends here at campus to do a few of them I would be ecstatic.

I didn't have the money at your age either! But now I'm an old fart and my kids have moved out so we have more disposable income. Stay in college, get your degree so you can get a better job (wish I had done that) and you'll have roadtrip funds before you know it! Wow... do I sound like a Mom or what??

I've only taken one random road trip and i was pretty drunk when we decided to go... we ended up spending all of our money and couldn't get home but when i think about it now i don't think that i ever have had that much fun in my life other than that. It's more exciting when you do it on impulse and take a trip to destination nowhere

I have never taken a random road trip before, sounds like alot of fun though. I guess with 3 kids it is harder to be so spontaneous. I am interested in your rolling dice thing that you do. How do you know which way to go by rolling the dice can you please give me more detail. I would lik to try it with my partner, I think that sounds awesome?

when we were kids we would do that . My dad would pack the whole family in the car and we would go where ever the wind would take me . Sometimes now i will plan a trip or sometimes i will get an idea in my head and just go . my bf hates that about me but will always give in
