Government benefit programs in trouble....no kidding huh?

We've been hearing about this for years but I think this is the first time I've actually seen any time frame given. Trustees for the government's two biggest benefit programs warned Tuesday that Social Security and Medicare are facing "enormous challenges," with the threat to Medicare's solvency far more severe. The trustees, issuing a once-a-year analysis of the government's two biggest benefit programs, said the resources in the Social Security trust fund will be depleted by 2041. The reserves in the Medicare trust fund that pays hospital benefits were projected to be wiped out by 2019. So, if the government knows this is happening don't you think they should be working on a plan to keep this from happening? Are the candidates saying they are doing anything about it? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080325/ap_on_bi_ge/social_security

Yeah, no kidding ctrymuziklvr....I can't help thinking about this refund program in which many people can expect a government refund to just about everyone for a minimum of $500 to maybe $1,500 each and will be received in around May..like instead of issuing this money refund, which yes, many could no doubt use, wouldn't it be wiser to put this money into the Social Security and Medicare programs....like duh??

Seriously huh? I think Bush is just trying to "go out" as the president who did such an awesome thing for us but we're smart enough to know we should be looking to the future and can deal with now just like we have been.

The candidates are not doing anything. The problem will not be solved. The united states are intended to fall into an economic depression, so that the Amero can replace the dollar amongst other nerarious reasons. This country is broke. Every day we borrow more money and occasionally we print more money--both of these actions devalue an already near-worthless dollar. The people are already taxed to the full extent--Obama has suggested a bill in which the united states pay an extra tax to the U.N. Of all the candidates, only Ron Paul, who was/is so ridiculed by so many--spoke of anything that was common sense in relation to our economic situation. Meanwhile, as of May 1st, Iran (in a move I can't blame them for committing) officially changed their currency for petroleum transactions from the dollar to the Euro. Fact is, the "petro-dollar" is all that really remains that gives our dollar any value, and the oil producing nations are beginning to shun it. Fact is, we're screwed no matter how you look at it, but hey we've been legitimately and authentically screwed since 1913--with the unconstitutional creation of the Fed in the first place, but most Americans just don't know and don't care. its been a issue talked about for last 16 years, promises have been made. Have you seen the changes, I HAVE. just the changes are hurting the ones that have no other choice, rather it be the people that experiance a devolpmental disablity or a retiree both are seeing benefits go unchanged or cut as inflation raises. every presidental canadate for last 16 years has said he has a plan, he will fix the system. That i have not seen so far. No real fix just talk and talk. im sure the canadates this year can tell you something good too. listen if u like.

Right now they've taxed people to the max and if they taxed us much more for these things, we would probably revolt. Part of the problems are more and more people living to older and older ages, but many ending up in nursing homes. Plus fewer people are having multiple babies (usually 2 parents and two children). So fewer people working to pay for more people retiring is part of the projections. I don't think more people having more babies that they can't support is the answer because our welfare and medicaid systems are being taxed to the limit and we already have lots of taxes from them, too. Not sure what the answer is. Take care

"Government benefit programs in trouble"... -In other news, the Earth is round- That not good enough? How about this one. -1982 wants its news back.- These programs have been broken for the longest and only now have reached a point where the media thinks we should finally care. They were all silent on this for decades. The only reason its on the forefront is due to the imminent scenario that'll happen. Even the candidates and their solutions won't be much on these problems. Many of them will require more taxes in order to stablize the spending (or just to pocket and waste as usual). Also add that more taxes with declining economy and more costly living (gasoline, food, energy)... that's also not a pretty picture and that could be a harsher scenario come true, before 2019.

Really who is surprised by this? I have been hearing about it before I was old enough to understand what it meant. My husband and I know there will be nothing left and started a retirement savings. We put what we can in there. We can sit here and wonder where all the money is going, but it wont do any good. Every part of our government is to blame. Not just one section. There are plenty of people coming up with solutions that may work, but no one is applying any action towards the problem. Everyone is just sitting around scratching their heads and wondering what went wrong. Does anyone else want to see the inside of Fort Knox to see if there is really anything left in there? The rich get richer and the poor stay poor..thats the new American Dream apparently!

Of course not.It isn't as powerful to talk about as the Iraq War or immigration.I can't help but wonder if these two programs would be saved if there were better paying jobs out there for the recent college grads and if all the "illegal" workers had better jobs to so they could pay more taxes.Just a thought.

I figured that some day medicare and social security would play out..I feel for our younger group like my children they will fall under those problems...I really do not believe that it is because of the baby boomers though, they fail to say that millions upon millions of people die daily that have never had a chance to even drew social security, but they have paid in for years...I think they spend our money on all their fancy living...I also believe that all the politicians that have retired are drawing millions more than the average Joe...

They have been saying this and giving specific dates for over a year. They have even come up with possible solutions. Such as people having their own personal retirement accounts. Do you know that millionaires still get social security, just because they are entitled to it. I personally do not want to think that far ahead. With the state of the world today, if any one is still alive then, they certainly will not want to be. Look how bad the world is today and it is only going to get worse. That is not being negative, that is Biblical.

I think the government will have to step in and fix social security and medicare. If our government can spend billion and billions of dollars to fight unnecessary wars in foreign countries than it can darn well take care of it's senior citizens. No senior should need to chose wether to be warm and fed or buy their needed medications.I think we as a country need to fix the USA and the problems here before we go trying to fix other countries. I have yet to hear a candidate say if or how they would address the social security issue. I do know that both Clinton and Obama have some ideas on health care for everyone though.
