How Long Will You Wait In A Queue Before Getting Fed Up & Walking Off?

Today I had to go to the post office, I had about 9 parcels to post, some bills to pay and I needed a few other things. When I went in, there was no queue, by the time I had finished my business I had caused a build up in the queue behind me! In fact it was right down by the door, after receiving a few dirty looks I put my head down and just carried on walking, only to see a few people huff and stalk out saying "I am not queuing in that, its ridiculous" So how long do you wait? Would you see it out to the bitter end or would you get cross or would you just go and do something else and come back a bit later? How patient are you!!

Hello gemini_rose, It really depends on what I need to do and what time I have at my disposal before I must do anything else. When I see a queue, I take my decision before entering into it i.e. whether or not I want to wait in the queue. once I am in, I would normally wait. Now, if the thing is crucial, I would definitely wait no matter what, given that I have nothing more important to do. If, however, I have multiple jobs to do, and I see a long queue, I'll shy away from it to do other tasks and will return later. In this way, I won't be worrying about other things and still will get my job done. Moreover, I normally plan my tasks before hand. There are rush hours on every place so I plan them on times when there is normally less people. I don’t particularly have problems, anyway!:-)

It's same here, gemini_rose, plus on other special occasions when people send cards to their loved ones. Also, on start of month when many foreigners send drafts or use other services other than bank for money transfer. On a daily basis, most crowded hours are either start of day or before and right after lunch.

How long i wait or how patient i am all depends on how rushed i am for time..if i have an appointment or something i'm needing to get back to. If i'm not in a hurry i'll wait between 5 and 10 minutes. If im in a hurry and the lines long i can always come back later if its not important or wait and hope the queue goes faster than it looks like..or hope others get impatient and give up. One exception to waiting is if the line is out the door i'll just come back later.

Oh yeah, lines out the door are usually not any fun, especially if the weather is bad.

My hubby is not patient, he would have walked in and then gone straight back out again! Me I would have been patient, many a time I have gone in the post office and waited patiently for around 20 minutes or more for a stamp.

it would depend on my needing on that time. how necessary i am in there to get those queque. as long as i can do it in another days, i would just leave the queque and come back earlier in next days. but if i really have any urgency on that time, so i should stay in queque although it takes long time. usually, i would like to make my mood not getting boring or fed up cause it would make me feel more worst. i try to build anything that make me in good mood so i am not upset with very long queque

I would go of and do something else and come back later there are times that People have a lot to post no need to get grumpy about it I just do not understand People today any more no patience and then giving dirty looks why one Day it might be them that will hold up the Queue

I know but they do get grumpy, it is not the first time it has happened that I have held the queue up in there and I always get dirty looks. No one has any patience you are right, and a lot have no manners anymore either, and that aggravates me more than anything.

Hello gemini, I am too late but I want to drop my part..LOL! I am very patient about waiting in a queue...I always encounter that and made me used to it..But, there are circumstances that It's conflict to another appointment, so I will decide to just go back..Like before, even at 7 am, the number I got was 400 already, I was wondering how early other people were there..LOL! So, I had a class that time, attend my class and go back to the office, when I got there, I was still waiting like 30 minutes before I was served! LOL!

It would depend on several factors. What are my plans for the rest of the day? How am I feeling? How fast is the line moving? How badly do I need to do what I am waiting to do at that moment? Who is with me and how are they behaving? If I do not have to be somewhere in the near future, I am feeling ok, the line is moving at a reasonable pace, and I am alone or with children who are behaving well, or if I absolutley NEED to do whatever it is I am waiting to do right then, I will wait as long as necessary, but if I have other things to do, I am not feeling well, the line is barely moving, I can do the task later, or the children are behaving poorly, I will not wait and will return later, but I do not get mad at anyone, I just leave and return when circumstances (mine and/or the location's) are better.

It usually depends on how badly I need to do what I am there to do. I also reward my children for good behavior (sometimes with sweets, sometimes with other things), but it does not always guarantee they can manage to behave. I have found that leaving a place due to their behavior does help though. I have left a full shopping cart at the store due to poor behavior and ever since then, shopping with the kids has been pretty easy. If they do start acting up, I simply need to ask if we need to leave and they stop. It did stink to have to go back and re-do most of my shopping (I had asked an employee to hold my cart until I could return later that evening, but they ended up putting most of it back anyway), but I will say that being able to shop now with much less stress was well worth the extra time I put in that one day and I am now able to get in and out of the store much quicker now too. I figure I spent an extra hour that day, but over the past 4 years since it happened, I have saved at least 5-10 minutes on each shopping trip (weekly), in the form of the less tantrums, leww dawdling, less whining and less fighting.

Oh that is brilliant, I just had visions of you doing that, even though I dont know what you look like!! I will have to remember that one!
@gemini_rose (16264)

I will wait, although I have been known to stamp my foot once or twice! I am lucky in that my kids are pretty good if they have to wait, if they are naughty they get no sweets, that is their reward for good behaviour. I cannot leave because I would not find the time to get back again.

it depends what it is for. i had to wait in line to get a flu shot and i waited for about 15 minutes and there was still at least 40 people in front of me, but one of the volunteers came and told me i could go to the front of the line (because i have a cane!!) how cool was that?
@gemini_rose (16264)

That was pretty cool, no doubt, I bet some of the others waiting did not think so though!

I used to be really quite patient but nowadays I am not fit to stand in huge queues! I would probably choose to go to another post office or come back at a different time if that were possible! I don't see why you had your head down sweety - you were doing what needed done and not just standing gossiping! xxx

I am sorry to hear that. Where I live people are quite funny in their ways, as a whole they are not a very tolerant lot!!

I really do not have much patience but if the trip was really important would wait as long as I could but if it was going to take a really long time I could not physically stand that long so would go something else then return later after the crowd had lessened.

I am one to stick a queue out too. I have once left it to come back later and find it is even bigger than when I left it!

I consider myself a very patient person.But i find it hard to deal with long lines, especially the ones that seems to drag. If the need is great then i tow the line if not i give up.

Yes when someone is holding the queue up with seemingly pointless things that is when I usually start footstamping, its different when its me holding a queue up though, I expect people to be patient.

It purely depends on the time of the day and my mood..generally i will be patient to wait for atleast 2-3 hours unless i am in real hurry

I am a dreamer too and often go into my world where the time passes much quicker! I too have seen explosions of rage and red faces as people get so cross at the time they have to wait, I think I may have caused a few of those today myself!

I can say that I am a patient person when it comes to waiting on queue. But It would really depend also on the situation and if you have the time to wait. If I see tons of people and it would be a big inconvenience , I would just walk off. Like this morning, I went to a local grocery and I saw lots of people cashing out at the counter. The mart is so small and people can hardly can get inside. I would not force myself to go there and be squeezed, so I decided to go other store. But if its a service that its needed to be finished for that day, I don't mind waiting as long as it will be done. An example of this is when I apllied for my birth certificate to be authenticated (here in the Philippines, it is required to have your birth certificated validated by the National Statistics Office) , I am #159 on the line but I needed to have it done so I just waited.
@gemini_rose (16264)
26 Mar 08
That sounds like a long wait you had for your certificate, but when it has to be done you have no choice do you, I just do not like the idea of having to come back. Once I am there I would rather sit it out, or stand in most cases.

it doesnt matter how long you take its not your fault that they post office only had one person working, you had stuff to do if people dont like it to bad but as for waiting it all depends on what i have to do and how much time ive already spend in line waiting. if i end up just leaving then i wasted all that time for nothing and just left, so if i stay i get my things that i had to do done and load off my day and mind. but if its something that can wait and its a long line then i may just leave and come back again later.. but again it all depends on what i have to do..

I know it was not my fault but I felt like it was!! They were not amused, I have to go in again tomorrow as well he he. Thanks for coming to chat!!

I am very impatient in this connection,.. may be i would be standing for 15 minutes.. at the maximum..and after which i give off.. its been my habit. To avoid all these difficulties.. i plan.. i will be the early bird.. in case i want to make some transactions that involve large queuing. Every month i have to remit my bill for Telephone and Internet connection.. which demands a long queue..when you go for remittance at the end of the month.. So i prefer.. to remit the same.. on the first day of the month itself where the counters are freeeeee..

I would probably wait 7 minutes or so after that i just walk away and come back later, i am ver y impaitent, i dont carry on i just leave, if there are other people waiting then i often give them a "i cant be bothered" sort of look and out i go, they loose your business and that is enough.

I consider myself a really patient guy. I don't easily get bored and I don't easily get tired of waiting. (That is how I made my girlfriend say yes!) I even can stand for a long time. So it is not a problem for me to wait. But if it happens that I have to do something after it that is really very important, it really would test my patience. Sometimes I would just decide to stop queuing and go to the other task. Or sometimes I will just wait. But I am not the type who rant to other people when I'm getting tired.
