I have a similar question: why there is no star on top of my avatar? I know it mark the rank of your 'reputation'. But what purpose does 'reputation' serve? And how can I get it?

When you reach 100 you get a star. It can be from 1-10. 10 being the highest. You know how you rate people well people have been rating you and now your an 8 which is pretty good. Keep up the good post and responces and it could go up.

You earn the star for your 100th post. The number on the star and its color reflect your rating in the community. The higher the number the higher your rating. Each rating level has a different colored star.

Do onething divide number of earnings by number of posts and multiply the answer by 1000 you will get a number . Round the number to highest integer and thats your reputation.... Or say number of star. So ultimately star are decided on basis of earning rather then the opposite
