dose any one know about using any phone with other cell phone companys

well i was wondering if i bought or got a phone form a friend thts has a different service and using it with the service tht i have if it would work. i know tht u can take a t-mobile sim card and put it into a cingular phone and it work as far as the phone book. i dont know it u can use it for more then tht.
