What kind of server? Web hosting server? Networking server? You could run windows 2008 server or windows 2003 server. That is if you have around 1000$ to buy the software. If your cheap , like i am , go with ubuntu server. It's free and used all the time for web hosting. Special hardware? Not really , i wouldn't put any money into the p4 unless you really need it. Servers , use different processors , different ram , and different motherboard. You can run it as a server no problem , but with a small load.
