When responding to a discussion do you read the other responses first?

I know it is virtually impossible to read ALL of the responses of EVERY discussion. But let's say it is a new discussion with 4 or 5 responses. Do you read those first? I try to read most all responses be giving mine. Sometimes, what I want to say, isn't coming to my mind the way I want to get my point across, I find that by reading the words of others that are like-thinkers, I can get my point or opinion across the way I want to and possibly adding to the thought process of the other responder. Geeeeez hope that makes sense..

I always read others' responses before replying myself. If I find a topic interesting enough to respond to, then I'm also going to be curious about what other people have to say about that topic also, so why wouldn't I read the other responses? If someone else has already pretty much said what I was going to say, then I will choose not to respond unless I think I'll still be contributing something unique to the discussion with my reply or feel I can add on to what someone else said, like you mentioned. To be honest, I think I've profited more from reading here at myLot than posting...and that's including financially! There's a lot of good information to be found on this site, but you can only make use of it if you're willing to read.

And then there's the response that you really want to give to someone else's comment. (here) Mainly to agree with or validate that comment! Maybe the point of view on discussions is different, are we discussing with just the person starting the discussion, or all the respondees as well?

I also read to learn. I like reading what other people think. Broadens my mind sometimes gives me insight to things I have not thought of myself. I guess there are many reasons I read others responses. Thank oyu for understanding what I was trying to say :)

What would you do if there were no responses to the Post? Now you're up the creek!
I never read the responses first because I want to be original. I don't need to steal ideas from the other responders, because I have a mind of my own. If everybody took ideas from others myLot would not a good place to Post!

If there are no responses to a post.. I usually will respond with what is on my mind.
I really don't think I explained what I was trying to say in my original post as well as I had hoped. I wasn't talking about taking ideas or thoughts from someone. If another poster expresses what you were trying to say in the way you wanted to say it, you would recognize that and that might get you out of your "writers block" if you will so you can expand on your thought process..
I'm just digging deeper sigh

As much as possible I do, but only the first ten of responses or those number of responses I find on the first page. It is hard to read almost ALL of them, especially when it reaches a hundred!
By reading them, I would then have more ideas on what to share and add on the discussion. That way, I could also avoid repeating what previous members has just told before me..

Not so often, and hardly. Because I believe, my opinion would be a unique one. Ofcourse not the whole one, but whenever I post, its either my simple to-the-point reply (which may be the same as others, but I am just required to make the point of what I am doing or how I am), or a deatiled answer, which, naturally would have so many points that I tend to add many points to discussions. Try reading few of my latest discussions. I ahven't gone through any responses, I can't because i have very less time, too less time, in fact, I have to sometimes skip visiting mylot. So it happens to be better for me to just write the response, rather then checking all the response and just adding few more points. And since I have a good speed of writing, I don't mind writing detailed responses.

I see your point. I am usually a good writer as well.. but sometimes the right words allude me. To try to mimic someones else opinion leaves one looking like they're a follower instead of a leader.
I like the detailed response you left for me :)

I have never read others responses before I response it.I'm afraid that others oponion will influnce me so that I will chage my first idea.So I always read it after I responsed it.Then I will read others responses and find the differents so that it can make me think more of it.I think this a good way.

I usually do. I at least read the first page, so I don't sound stupid or repeat what other folks have said a billion times. If I agree, I'll not my agreement and put my own orginal spin on what they said.

Yes, it makes sense. Sometimes I read responses and sometimes I don't. If it is an advice topic; a lot of times I will scan some of the comments. I don't want to keep repeating what ten other people already said.
In this discussion, I didn't read anyone else's comments because they have no bearing on my answer.

well,i usually don't read others' responses cause i may have my unique opinion about the discussion, yet,if i read others' responses first, then, they will affect my thinking process.yet, after i responded to the discussion,i usually read cause i want to know different ideas from different people,it makes me think much more.by doing this,i can compare what i thoughtt to others',thus,i can get myself improved.

Sometimes I read the responses, but usually when I read a discussion that catches my eye I just response to then I'll go back to read some of the responses. Other then that I just response because I otice I'm the type of person that whe I read a discussion whatever comes to mind I'm saying(typing it LOL)

Definitely we have to read the previous replies as much as possible, So that we won't have to repeat the same thing again and again. Yes we could add something to the on going discussion but giving your response will be of waste unless you read the whole thing.

I usually enter a discussion, such as this one, from my email notification so I don't get the chance to see what others have written. But if I am just browsing through new discussions and there are only a couple of comments when I get into it I will read those first. That is usually when I have something to say to someone else who replied above me.

I find myself reading more discussions and all their responses more than I post. I usually read to find out what someone else has said because I don't want to double post. Also I find I get writer's block and end up trailing completely off the discussion if I get distracted. If I read before I reply I seem to have a better outcome of what I was going to say. If what I was going to say has already been posted then I won't post.

It depends, if it's a question with only one answer I'll check to see if someone has answered it.
If it's an opinion or a experience to relate, then I'll just respond without checking any of the other responses.
