My parents have 9 ferrets. When I lived with them, I purchased a ferret, and now my whole family is hooked! I can't have them where I live, but my parents can and they love them! Now, on to what can save your little fur babies life! It's a really simple trick that will also keep you sain because you'll always be able to find the little fuzzies. Teach your ferret to "Come" when called, just like you do with your dog! We use a bell, and ring it every time we want the ferrets to come to us. To teach this niffty little trick, just give your ferret a nice yummy treat every time you ring the bell! We use raisins and bananas (make sure to only give a little taste, as these foods can hurt their bellies if they eat too much.) This saved the life of one of ours when she slipped out the door. Instead of chasing her, we just rang the bell and she came ferret hopping to us. It's great now when we let them out, because instead of searching under couches, we just ring the bell and they come to us! What tricks do your ferrets know? And do you think that teaching your ferret to come is something you might do?

Thanks for the tip, i dont call my ferrets that much, and when i do i have to sit there and call there name over and over and then they come out when they fill like it, my ferret got out of the backyard (i let them go outside, but he foudn a hole) and he was under a tarp next door, it took me about and hour to find him, and scared the hell out of me, i will try this thanks

This will really really help you then! They come out of hiding from anywhere when they know there's a yummy treat waiting for them! Good luck.

I'm glad you shared this! I've had a ferret for a number of years, and it would have been helpful when he was younger. He's fairly old now, and has cancer and adrenal gland disease so he doesn't stay out of his house for too long these days. I'll definitely try to teach my next ferret to come, it sure would save a lot of worry! Thanks for sharing the how-to. :)

wow! that's almost excatly identical to what I've taught my 3 ferrets to do lol instead of using a bell, I just whistle, and they come over as fast as they can because they know that I've probably got food or something XD But ya, if you want to teach a young animal anysort of trick, all you have to do is bribe them with a little treat :)

LOL. Agreed. To me, getting my animals to come to me is always the most important thing to teach them. It keeps my sanity, and keeps them out of trouble. Thanks for your response!

It is a great idea to teach your ferrets to come when called just in case they wander off. I don't worry about my ferret too much because he has his own room and can't really get out of there. He is spoiled!
