why internet not externet?

maybe because every information can be found internally in different websites.

That lies within the origins of the internet. it was originally made by CERN (an international science group) to serve as a way to share information within the university, so it was an internet then. The site addresses refer to the world wide version of this (hence the www, world wide web). hope this wasnt too much technical info, i get carried away sometimes ;)

I think it is called internet because from what I learned from my course in college,Internet is the term for mutilple computers INTERcoNnEcted or linked with each other. World Wide Web on the other hand are the documents,files,pictures that are exchanged on the internet. The connection of computers that we have at work is called LAN or local area network. We can say computers on one building only but if it goes beyond it , it is called WAN or Wide Area Network.
