When going to a hair stylist, do youknow what you want, or do you let them help?

I know nothing about hairstyles, what looks good with a particular face shape etc... Very often, unless I just want a trim, I have no idea what kind of change I want to make to my hairstyle. I will tell the stylist that I am ready for a change, but don't know what I want, for the exact reasons I stated above. The stylist often will say, "well what do you want?" I tell them the length I want, but that I don't know about anything else. I tell them I am open for suggestions. They usually will play with my hair for 30 seconds, but then tell me what I want is up to me. Now I understand people not wanting to mess up someones hair. Thais is probably the main reason they give me a blank stare. However, aren't stylists suppose to be trained in this type of thing? They could at least pick up a book that has the different styles in it, and say, I think this one would look good because.... But very often I end up saying screw it.. just trim it. Yesterday, I went in to the place I got my color and cut done the last time... she no longer works there.... sigh But there was an older gentleman stylist, probably late 50's early 60's that was ready for me. He asked, what are we doing? I told him I just need a trim. He didn't ask me how much I wanted cut off.. he just went to work. The only other thing he aslked me was about my bangs. hey are pretty long. He asked if I was tletting them grow. Again, I told him I really didn't know what I wanted. He suggested a face frame, picked up a book and show me what he meant. I said SURE!. He finished, then showed me how o blow dry it and 3 different ways I can wear it. I was THRILLED. It looked so good, now if only I can duplicate the looks without him in my bathroom... lol So.. do you know what you want, or are you clueless like me?

I'm always clueless. I usually just say "a bit shorter everywhere." Afterwards, they get into specifics and I tend to reply "whatever looks good.. ?" :P I'm not a very difficult guy, so I'm usually satisfied.

I am not overly original when it comes to my hair. I like it straight, and shoulder length. When I go to a hair stylist, I usually know what I want, and it's usually that. Occasionally I'll get a perm, but not very often.

I don't go to hairdressers these days as I can't afford it. My hair is long so I trim it myself and as for my fringe I stupidly cut a fringe forgetting how fast my hair grows and I'm growing it out again!!! When I did go to hairdressers the one I went to would ask me and if I had an idea, which if I had they would say ok or they would suggest a variation of it to suit me. If I had no idea they would show me magazines or their book of hair styles. I thought this was the norm but after reading your discussions, I'm not sure, maybe it was just that hairdresser that did this.
