“sphenopalatineganglioneuraliga,” the condition commonly referred to as brain freeze.
Tips include drinking a glass of warm water at the first sign of brain freeze and pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth to constrict blood vessels.
I use to just grin and bear it and wished it would go away quickly. About 6 years ago I heard about the roof of your mouth tip and it does work.
I never knew that brain freeze had a technical term. The Krystal Company (another company I never heard of) is coming out with the Krystal Freeze and a marketing promotion on myspace withs tips on how to combat this dreadful thing.
We were just talking to our neighbor about this the other day. His girlfriend's son has CP, autism, is deaf, among other things. He is 11 and had ice cream for the first time several weeks ago. Well he loved it. Gene said he was eating so fast that he must have gotten a brain freeze and just started to cry. Poor thing. Here he is eating something that tastes good but doesn't understand why his head is hurting.

A brain freeze is when you eat something cold very fast. Like Ice cream, an Icy drink/slurpee, milkshake. When I get one, the first thing I do is squeeze my eyes shut because it is a dreadful pain, but is usually doesn't last long. I guess your brain is telling your body to slow down and enjoy the delicious item that you are eating or drinking.

Gemini,
Are you familiar with the term "ice cream headache"? that is what we had always called them - i think your blood vessels shrink from the cold and BOOM! headrush headache. When I lived in Wisconsin and New York state I would sometimes get them the instant I walked outside from the warm house!

too funny Modestah!!! You are describing me to a T. I usually get mine from Starbuck Frappuccino's or Rita's Mistos. Both are so yummy, you forget that you are going to get the freeze!!!

That's a great tongue twister there...first time I have heard of such condition. What are its symptoms? Thanks for this very helpful tips...I'm sure a lot of us will be saved from this discussion. Is this condition deadly that it can kill? Sounds scary...a brain freeze is something I dread having, nor any member of the family.

The only symptom is that you get a tremendous heachache!!! I'm cringing just thinking about it.
I just looked it up to see how you would say it, and this is what I found:
Sphenopalatineganglioneuralgia
(En español: Neuralgia del ganglio esfenopalatino)
Say: sfee-noh-pal-uh-teen-gan-glee-oh-new-ral-juh
This huge word means an ice cream headache. You know, the feeling you get when you eat something really cold and your head goes "Yow!"
