Just bought an MP3 player can I download songs from iTunes?

I want the American Idol songs, but I can't find anything about downloading to somethings besides an Ipod!
Please help, I have my mp3 charger so I can start downloading the songs. If I can't get them on to my mp3 player, I don't want to download iTunes for nothing.

You need to download iTunes and you need to have a credit card or checking account to set up within iTunes to be allowed to start downloading songs.

I knew I needed the credit card and the download - I didn't want to download it to my laptop if it was going to work with a non-iPod.
