How many numbers do you use in your phone number?

In total I have 10. When people ask my phone number I just give them the last 7. The first three are my area code and unless it is a long distance call I don't mention them. I find that people from other countries seem to mention the first three. Soon they will be making us use all 10 locally too. How about where you are from?

We basically just use the 7 digits, sometimes even just the last 4 if everyone involved knows which town we're referring to. There are only two towns that have more than one option for the uh...middle 3 digits. I've never had to deal with country codes. My ex husband did call his brother in Japan once and I know it took forever to dial and get through...and cost us $100 when he stayed on the phone for a really long time!

Oh absolutely! This was back in 1998 and we didn't even have a computer, IMing was like a cool new technology reserved for special occassions!

Technology is so great at keeping families separated by thousands of miles close.

My hubbys brother is in China and I haven't even tried to call there yet! I think e-mail is so much easier.

Hi whywiki.. I have three mobile numbers. The other one which is from the Philippines, it is a 10 digit number consisting the first two as the area code and the next two digits as the cellphone network provider and the last 6 digits as my number itself. If someone ask my number I have to give the full 10 digit so that person can reach me with a plus (+) sign at the beginning of my number. The other two numbers are composed of 10 digits, the first two as the area code. If someone who is just here in DK ask my number then I can give just the 8 digits.

We also have seven digits, the normal count.. Others would sometimes ask for my area code, so that's the only I get to mention it and so it becomes ten as well. As for my case, I know some of the area codes so I don't have to ask for it as I only have to check where they are from..

I suppose in time it will seem normal for us to have 20 digit numbers.

When I dial a local number in Virginia then I use 10. But if I tell people our number in our area like a doctor or something then I just mention 7 because they already know the area code. If it's overseas then it's 3 numbers added before the area code.

Overseas calls intimidate me at the best of times.

In Massachusetts we've had to use all 10 for local calls for oh about 3 years now. It's such a pain. I can't call my son in the upstairs apartment without dialing the area code. I don't want to date myself, but when I was a young child there were still places that you only needed to use the last 4 digits.

How bizarre having to dial 10 digits to reach upstairs! How long before it's 13?!

Where I live it is 7 numbers also that I give to local people and 10 numbers if it is someone who is going to call me long distance. But where I used to live all the phone numbers started with the same three numbers so all I had to give people were the last 4 numbers and same with others giving me their number. I used to live in a town of 7,000 people so that is why we all had the same first three numbers, other than the area code. But of course our area code was the same too.

When I was growing up you could tell what area of town someone was in by the first three digits, nowadays its a crapshoot!

I guess we get used to things pretty fast and then it just seems normal.

my friends in Houston have to use all 10 numbers. In fact, I think Houston now has like 4 or 5 area codes

I guess it is just as easy to remember 10 numbers as it is 7 just another one of life's obstacles I guess.

Locally we use the full 10 because there are 2 other area codes close by. Not quite as much as in the bigger cities like New York and Chicago though.

I think I'll probably adjust to 10 and find it normal in a year or so.

If it is a local number then I have to dial 7 numbers. If it is long distance it is either 10 or 11. Sometimes I have to dial the area code and sometimes 1 and then the area code. It depends on where the call is going. I usually include the area code if I know they will be calling long distance to call me.

One day we will have a manual the size of a phone book to tell us how to use the phone!

I give the 7 numbers if I know its a local call. I only give the area code if I'm not sure or they ask for it.

I forget sometimes when I am talking to people long distance and they have to remind me.
