How much is too much to live in an apartment in a gated community?

My son & I ventured over to where my husband works to look at apartments, have lunch w/hubby amd check out the school my son may be going to. The first place we visited is owned by the same management as our current complex. They recently acquired this property and ti is under major renovations. The apartments are about the same size we have, but seemed soo much smaller. Even with the upgrades there are weird things - like mirrored walls in the older buildings - that you could live with, but we want something not only close to hubby's job, but someplace we really like. The perk about this place is that we would carry over our security deposit, would not have to break our lease, and only put out about $300 in "fees". After lunch we went to another complex that I found by accident. When we pulled up I saw: gate community, tennis courts, weight room and though MAJOR bucks. Less than 9 years old, they are renovating with top of the everything - even brush nickel fixtures. The layout makes each apartment look 2-3 times larger than what we currently have. We would gain roughly 150 sqft, a porch, and a lot more storage. After being completely blown away, I was totally shocked at the price. They are only asking $1,300/month for 1,247sq ft 2 bdrm, 2 ba (linen closets in both bathrooms)! The price includes water, sewage & trash. Each unit has a high capacity washer & dryer..the kitchen is huge - at least double the size of the one we have (and it had a pantry!). I was blown away by the 2 bedroom and asked to see the 3 bedroom; it was the size of a house! There is a dining room, but the kitchen is large enough to put a kitchen table + an island. Here is their website http://www.botanicahome.com/ (pictures do not do this place justice). Do you think that $1300 is too much for a top of the line place? We currently pay $990/month and it is okay. The building is old and they half do any renovations.

I think that sounds like a pretty good deal, sedel1027. It would be an exceptionally good deal for around here in the part of Tx. I live. Just curious, what was their price on the 3 bedroom?

Where are you in TX? We lived in Katy (right outside of Houston) for a few months and paid $925 for a 1200sqft 2 bd/2ba less than 2 years old in a gated community. The three bedroom small (1485 sqft) is $1590, the three bedroom large (1,525 sq ft) is $1660. The three bedroom large is 2.5 baths, is a town home set up, includes a garage and a 215 sqft porch. The three bedroom I viewed was the small. Like I said those are like a small house. You could get lost in them LOL I don't think I have even been in an apartment that had room in the kitchen for a table + a dining room.

We are in the Dallas area. The place sounds great. I'm sure I've never seen an apartment with DR and eat in kitchen.

Wow...where the heck do YOU live??...here in NYC $1,500 will get you a glorified studio apartment --so obviously no washer/dryer..are you kidding like where would one put it??..a kitchen the size of a closet and usually a non-existent bedroom (why you think the invention of "daybeds"??).. a dinky bathroom.. no dining room...Hey if I were you...I grab this place!! I pay very low rent in my apt only because I lived here so long...nearly all my life...but my apt is exactly like a glorified studio...

I live in Louisiana. The other two places I lived, North Carolina and Iowa, rent prices were pretty close to where I live now. With the $1250 we would be paying in rent, we could rent a house or even buy a house (there are new construction home here for $130K).
