There is a lot of stigma attached to mental illnesses in contemporary society. People often have a very stereotypical idea of what depressed, and those suffering from other mental health issues/ conditions, people look and act like. People often make snap judgements regarding a person with a diagnosed mental illness. How do you react to people with diagnosed mental illnesses? What do you think when you hear the words mental illness?

I guess I never really thought about it before in all honesty...I suppose how the term is used would make a difference in how I think ya know....In general I dont think anything really I mean its such a broad term....I'm mentally ill for crying out loud but I'm not SO mentally ill that I can't function ya know...The term Mentally Ill really does cover such a wide area I dont think I could ever really think one particular thing when I hear it

I first think that the person is mad ! But in fact mental illness has many types and it is different that I think. Mental illness is any disease or condition affecting the brain that influences the way a person thinks, feels, behaves and/or relates to others and to his or her surroundings. Although the symptoms of mental illness can range from mild to severe and are different depending on the type of mental illness, a person with an untreated mental illness often is unable to cope with life's daily routines and demands.

Work springs to mind, I work for a psychologist in forensic mental health so that's what immediately sprang to mind! I've been around people who suffered with mental illnesses for most of my life, mainly as my mom did and still does suffer from depression and has suffered several nervous breakdowns. Mental Illness is one of the worst type of illnesses you can suffer from, there is no quick fix or operation that can be undertaken to make you better.
