Is it better to feed home made dog food or commercial dog foods are better? How do we ensure we do not pose a risk to our dogs if we prepare them at home?

I feed my dog home made dog food which is just cooked bones, meat and a little vegetable and rice. My dog is very picky and so he usually finishes the bone and meat but leaves the rest. The choice depends on the type of dog you are breeding. Most people buy branded dog food for their pure bred or high quality dogs. But there are a small number of people who prepare their own. To make the food safe, make sure it is throughly cooked to kill all the harmful microbes and serve it while it is hot. Then dispose of the unfinished remains as soon as possible so that your dog wil not eat food that has gone bad. And be sure to clean the bowls.

Thank you. I read somewhere that cooked bones are likely to splinter in the dog's stomache if eaten. Will this be dangerous to my dog's health? I think it is in about.com where I read it.
