The Olympics and You.....

This is a controversial commentary so you have been warned. If you know me well enough I have a sense of humor, have to with my work that I do for a living. Because of that the Olympics have created a stir for me to the point I am even thinking of putting up stuff on my Blog for all to read. For those of you who do not know me, I am a journalist/writer/poet. I know the Olympics are something a great deal of people look forward to and train for. However because of the turmoil that has been going on there with Tibet, my thoughts on the Olympics have absolutely been soured to the point that I feel even the Athletes who have made it to the Olympics this time around should boycott. China has created a situation that now can not be hidden. I have a friend who has been to Tibet, communed with the Tibetan Monks, my Sister often sees the Dali Lama in her home town when he is there. The travesty that has been created will only be supported if we allow it. Now I know a lot of these Athletes have trained their hearts out, however if they are doing this to their own people. Aren't our Athletes in the same boat? I personally will not be watching the games or have anything to do with them. It is a small step but for me needed. Thanks for your responses. Aingealicia

I think that for China to have secured the Olympics at all is a travesty. The Chinese Government (but not the people per se) are bullies and their latest actions in Tibet demonstrate this admirably. However, western governments dare not incur any ill feeling with China for economic reasons. China is now doing what we did 100 years or so ago, becoming the Worlds manufacturer. So we sit on the sidelines and say "very naughty", but do nothing. I agree entirely that it would be a huge disappointment, but perhaps it's time a few countries started to consider just what message might be sent by pulling their national teams out of the Olympics. The other thing that I have noticed is the increase in Chinese on this site. Some of them have made quite pro Chinese political statements in just their first post and then disappeared. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I am beginning to wonder.

Oh my goodness. I did not know about that on the posting. I will expect the hate comments. Thanks for the heads up. I think it would be a huge message. However we can't do it, it is up to the countries and the Athletes. I would support any Country or Athlete that took this course of action. I agree, China should have never gotten the Olympics. To much can go wrong there. I wonder how many will not come home the same if they go. Ainge
