Yeah, I actually wrote a blog post about proper discussion etiquette. I am getting tired of being who think "you have no morals" or "God says that's wrong" or "Don't be an idiot" are actually real arguments when you should instead try to actually respond to what was being said using coherent and well-explained thought processers. It makes you look stupid, and the rest of us feel like you're not even listening at all. http://theschoolpad.blogspot.com/2008/03/how-to-have-intelligent-discussion.html

What if a goddess says your wrong? Just kidding...it is important to know how to handle a disscussion and stay with the facts. I can't say I always stick to my own advice on this one. But with a little effort and blog like yours, I could probably make some headway...Or I could just remain "an idiot".

Nobody's perfect. I make those errors too, especially if I've had a bad day or something. However I try to do them as little as possible. I have seen people who would repeatedly use these kinds of fake arguments.

Okay so if I say God says that's wrong and then list the Scriptures, would that be okay? I'm just asking. I do think it's silly to make a blanket statement and then not offer any proof.

Well listing the scriptures is proof, however if it's an non-religious conversation it still wouldn't be "related" proof because you'd be assuming the person listening would follow those particular scriptures. (they could have another , or no,religion). It really is a rule of thumb to leave religion out of non-religious debates. However, you should use your own good judgment to decide how close is close enough to use such references. I will agree that if you back up with some scriptures, it does make it seem like an actual argument, and not just a push-on and therefore it's fine to use - as long as you're ready for any kind of comeback.

Generally speaking I quite agree with what you said. But I think when we get technical it is difficult to avoid bringing in 'God' into the picture. For example, in philosophical discussion on the question of morality some would say that God is the source of morality, some would say that God need to come up even there. And then one might get into the question of worldview and then we see different implications for different philosophical system. But in general it is quite weird when people just try to prove their point by saying 'the Scripture says so and so..." when the other could retort '...to hell with your Scripture...".
