saving money to get that "extra" money

now that recession is hitting every single nation in the world (okay, maybe not all economies but most), saving money is one of the best way to get that "extra money" that everyone is asking about. here are some of my own ways on how i save so that i could get that "extra money" without having to look for a second job. 1. packed lunch - bringing your own lunch to work is a sure way to save. just think of it, buying your lunch in the mcdonald's these days is about $6-$10 (in US dollars). if you bring your lunch from home in one whole month, that's a whopping $180-$300 savings a month. And that is, if you're only eating at Mcdonald's but most of the times, if we are eating lunch outside the office, it is something fancier which costs more. okay, you'll say that the food you bring to the office is also costing you more on grocery. but not as much as it costs "eating out" for lunch. take it from me, someone who has done this and seen a trmendous savings. 2. paying bills online and subscribing to e-bill- okay you may ask, how do you save from paying bills online? well, first thing, you save on stamp. have you noticed that the cost of one stamp has gone up from $0.39 to $0.42? maybe, you'll say that it's just a few cents, but let me tell you, these few cents could build up into a bigger amount. also, if you're paying your bills online and is subscribing to e-bill, you help all of us by saving a tree from being cut and made into the paper where your bills are printed on. another thing, you save electricity because you dont have to shred those paper bills that you dont need anymore! 3. doing the errands together - let's face it the cost of gas is not going anyway but up. trying to put your trips together so that you save on gas is the best way to save money. Let's say you're going to the grocery store for a quart of milk and the store is about 2 or 3 miles away from you, are you going to waste you time and gas going back and forth for a quart of milk? If it is an emergency, i understand, but if not, you're better off with listing all the things you need to buy and getting all those in one go. 4. unplugging all the plugs in the house - i know this one is tedious, but even the flyer from the electric company is saying that if you want to save on your electric bills, take off those plugs from the socket because even if your TV or computer is not on, they are still consuming a little bit of electricity when they are plugged. So after reading that, I make time to ensure that before I sleep at night, all those plugs are "unplugged" from the socket. It saves me about 6-8 hours of electricity consumption. I assure that it works, you should see the difference in my bill, not much but it sure does save me money. there are so many other ways of saving money. now, more than ever, we have to learn how to save every penny we could. so what's your style of saving money?

I've been unplugging all my electronics recently with the exceptions of the stove fridge satelitte receiver dryer and my alarm clock. By paying bills online we dont just save 40 cents on a stamp they've gone up to 52 cents a stamp so..every 2 bills is ean extra dollar if you mail them. As impersonal as this sounds I've also been emailing people rather than writing letters or invitations...again saves the stamp and paper...plus i get a much faster answer. I've been thinking of riding my bike to my parents house lately on weekends rather than driving over...if i stay late i can always as for a ride home. Other ways are: carpooling, buying bulk of foods you eat alot of that are nonperishable, growing a garden. Heres one...if you live in a farming area, have dogs and have a magpie (or other birds) stealing the dog food: Get a cat litter pan with a lid and flap to put the dog food in to feed the dogs from, theyre smart enough to open it and the birds arent...saves at least a 18kg bag of food a month. (about $14-20 dollar savings depending on the brand you buy)

I know I heard that about the electricity years and years ago, but was always told that I was nuts and that it didn't help at all. I still unplugged a lot of things - hair dryer, toaster, can opener, just because I didn't use them all the time. I just saw a commercial on TV the other day that talked about that very thing so you can bet I'm going to be unplugging things when not being used. I won't unplug the TV and computer, but the space heater (which I should anyway) and lamps and such I sure will, along with the things I have been as a matter of routine. It can't hurt!

i know, some of my friends are also saying that this is nonsense. but then again, when i started doing this a few months ago, i noticed a drop in my electricity bills. as i've said it is not as much but every little change helps... after all a hundred wouldn't be a hundred if you don't start with a dollar.

This is an awesome discussion, and thank you for the sound advice, you should post his on your blog as it will surely be picked up by the search engines as good content, it would be nice for you to get traffic to your site from this discussion, I checked it out. I would also suggest looking in my profile for the bigcrumbs link as a good way to save on shopping too... I pay all my bills online and have found that over a couple of years it has paid off, I also have been eating less fast food and another thing is I put all my change in a giant jar that I send to the principal on my house when it is full. good luck to you.
