Best diet for a dog

I have just got a puppy from someone who needed to re-home her and I was looking for some advice as a novice dog owner. She is approx 12mths old and a cross between a Jack Russel and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Her previous owner said she ate biscuits in the morning and meat at night but as she was a bit on the thin side I gave her extra biscuits on her first night with us which she wolfed down. Yesterday she had some pasta scraps at dinner and some shephards pie left overs at tea time as she wolfed her meat. We gave her a half pigs foot from the butchers because she was chewing on things as she is still teething and she ended up eating the lot! I thought about increasing her food but she still has biscuits left from breakfast. I gave her another pigs foot to chew on and she ended up eating all of that as well. Should I just increase her biscuits and meat so she gains a bit of weight? Should I limit her on the pigs feet and just get plain bones for her to gnaw on? How often should I give her food scraps and is there anything I should avoid?

By biscuits, do you mean the snacks we give dogs as treats? Dogs should get commercial dog food either from the store or a veterinarian because it's well balanced and has all the vitamins they need. Sounds as if your pup is going to be a nice medium size and has lots of energy so I doubt if her calorie needs are being met! Careful of the pigs feet, bones can splinter and damage the stomach and intestines. If you want a really good treat, go to www.bestbullysticks.com and order some bully sticks. They're all natural and last a long time, are even nutritious! My dogs love them! Anyway, feed your pup dog food with occasional treats. Most dogs love vegetables so give her those but not grapes or onions as those will hurt them. My dogs are nuts about broccoli, both raw and cooked!

The pigs feet from the butcher's shop should be fine, as only cooked bones will splinter. However, there are much better treats for dogs out there.

The biscuits are the commercial sort but I wondered if maybe they were not enough for her. I didn't intend to feed her on table scraps all the time it just seemed a bit of a waste especially if she was hungry. I guess I will be cooking up an extra portion of veg for her then and I will be sure to have a luck at those bullysticks. Thanks for the advice.

Are the biscuits dough...or dog? Did the shepherd's pie have potatoes, butter and other ingredients as well? The reason I am asking is that every dog we have ever owned rarely ever gets 'people food' and certainly not those with starches and simple carbohydrates like potatoes and pasta...they are converted to sugar and definitely not good for pets. We buy a good quality dog food with meat protein as the first ingredient and feed them that...and not much else. We give bones from the butcher as a treat once a week or so...and crunchy dog biscuits as well. We never feed our dogs scraps from the table while we are eating because they start begging and become real pests during meal time once they know that they will be given food from the table. Upon occasion we will give the dogs and cats a morsel of meat, chicken for fish...but people food is not a regular part of their diet...at the vet's suggestion. Dogs who eat people food and are not given a good quality dog food often end up with diabetes, and a variety of other health problems later in life. We also keep our animals on the leaner side because obesity in pets is rising just as it is in people. Our family always had dogs while I was growing up and David and I have had four. All of them lived to close to 16 years without any health problems on the regime we follow with them. We make sure they get enough exercise and tender loving care and when their time comes we know that we gave them the best life possible and let them go with a prayer of gratitude for all they brought to life while they were with us. Good luck with your new furry family member...and I hope the suggestions provide another perspective. Good to be back in touch my friend...take care until we chat again. Raia

The biscuits were designed for dogs and had all the usual blah about ingredients and being the best for your dog but as she didn't seem interested I have since changed them to a more meaty variety from a better brand. I have heard conflicting things from dog owners regarding scraps from thu e never in a million years approach to the dog is our dustbin and I definately wanted to take the best approach with Sky. She is certainly never fed from the table - I firmly believe that a dog should not be encouraged to beg. She only really got scraps at first because she looked a bit scrawny and I wanted to fatten her up a bit but she is certainly filling out now. I agree that obesity in dogs is a real problem and I find it quite saddening to see overweight dogs limping along the streets for the owners are obviously killing them with kindness by over feeding or giving too many treats. Thankyou for your comments and wisdom as always. GGP
