Telling your kids about how babies are made....

Okay I was watching the baby story (or maybe a similar show on cable -- its been awhile back)... and this mother was expecting a baby and had an older son who was 7, yes SEVEN years old... And.... she told him that the way she got pregnant was she "swallowed a baby seed". I think she even added that she said she swallowed a girl seed so he could have a little sister or something like that. That is crazy, and I think it would confuse the child BIG TIME as he got older! I think its wrong for parents to lie, especially in a situation like that. I'm not saying the parent has to give all of the details, but not blatantly lie like that! That is wrong! It could be very traumatic for the child! What do you think? Please share:)

I cannot tell kids these sorts of stories, I do not think it is right to tell them things like that. My son is 6 now, he asked me when he was 5 about how a baby is made, so I told him, in words he could understand. He was not too amused but there was no way I was going to say a stork had fetched it or something, for a 5 year old he is very perceptive and telling him that would have just caused more questions that I would have found extremely hard to answer. Much easier to tell him the truth!

Nothing good EVER comes out of lying to your child. I agree with you, they don't have to give every single detail but surely give them enough information that it will satisfy their curiosity.

You know it's not good to lie, but my parents did the same, well my mom actually. She told me that a stork comes down and leaves the baby in a blanket and thats how they were born. As I got older, I knew she lied, but I took it as understanding because I was little, and you sometimes have to make up somehing for a child. Eventually the child grows up to realize how babies are REALLY made. I doubt he'd have the girl seed boy seed story in his mind, but it may make him laugh when he has kids and then he'll be telling them the same thing. No harm in it. It won't affect anyone.
