Congress and Petroleum Companies.

Representatives from the major petroleum companies have been dragged to Capital Hill to be grilled by Congress about record profits. The first question the reps from the oil industry should ask the Congress members is... "Petroleum companies made about 20 cents per gallon profit last year. How is that 'obscene', but the 18 cents a gallon for gasoline and 24 cents/gallon for diesel isn't?" The next question should be... "so how come it isn't 'obscene' that you want to steal more?"

Yes, the first thing that needs to be done is eliminate the fuel taxes. Isn't it funny how Congress wants to put the blame on the companies while they are charging taxes on every phase of production and sales? If they are really concerned about the price of fuel then the obvious answer is deregulation and ending the obscene taxation of the oil industry. Oh yeah, and fire the EPA while you are at it.

Yup, doing away with fuel taxes at all levels would do wonders for the economy and the price at the pump. Unfortunately it would also do wonders to the cashflow for Congress, something those thieves aren't willing to see happen.

I live in canada, and when we compared our prices for gas,we have always compared it to yours. Now that the Canadian dollar is almost par with the american money,we can finally compare apples to apples.Currently the average price of gas in Canada is aprox. $4.80 per four litres(equivalent to 1 US gallon).Yet the government up here does nothing about our escalating prices(expected to reach $6 by summer)).It does seem the energy companies continue to make record profits each year while the consumer gets gouged.I agree that government should not be able to mandate profits, but I also agree with free competition and that is not happening in the field of energy prices.

You probably have the same problem we have. I wonder how much of that $4.80 is taxes.
