Any advice for feline renal insufficiency/failure?

My 14 year old cat has just been diagnosed with "renal insufficiency". She has lost 2 lbs. since her last vet visit in May. She always has a bowl of dry IAMS cat food and I give her either a large can or a small can of canned IAMS cat food every day. Today, on the vet's advice, I took her completely off the dry food. She isn't drinking hardly any water at all. I read there is a controversy regarding low protein diet. Some vets (like mine) say to put your cat on a low protein diet. Some vets say this won't help at all. My baby will be 15 in June. This diagnosis is a shock. I found out about the renal insufficiency because she had her blood drawn to determine if she could have dental work done (teeth cleaning). Do you have a cat with renal insufficiency/failure? Do you have any advice?
