Live Only For Today.

"Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand." "Give us this day our daily bread." This prayer teaches us to ask for today's bread only. Today's bread is the only kind of bread you can possibly eat. Shut off the past! Let the dead past bury its dead. ... Shut out the yesterdays which have lighted fools the way to dusty death. ... The load of tomorrow, added to that of yesterday, carried today, makes the strongest falter. 'Every day is a new life to a wise man.' Shut off the future as tightly as the past. ... The future is today. ... There is no tomorrow. The day of salvation is now. Waste of energy, mental distress, nervous worries dog the steps of a person who is anxious about the future. ... Let's be content to live the only time we can possibly live: from now until bedtime. "Anyone can carry their burden, however hard, until nightfall," wrote Robert Louis Stevenson. "Anyone can do their work, however hard, for one day. Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly, purely, till the sun goes down. And this is all that life really means." Have a great life from Deeeky

Whilst I agree that we have to live for today, I don't agree that we should shut away our past. My past is what keeps me going... what motivates me. I can shut the door on the parts of it that are completed, or have fizzled out, but never could I go on if I shut all the doors behind me. I would merely be standing still. Take an example... if you were to completely lose your memory tomorrow, what would you have to fight for, to motivate you? I can't begin to imagine what that would be like. There are also words from the past, my subconcious, which help me from time to time, in what I'm doing today. So, you see, it's not always wise to completely shut off your past. Some of it, you must carry with you, but the heavy bags, you leave behind. Brightest Blessings, my dear friend. x

Losing my memory from the past seems to be exactly what is needed. There would be no bad thought from past experinces even though we may have learnt from them and try to things a better way. A clean start with no hinderence also seams the way to go through today and only today. Which means that all our efforts are concentrated for maximum thought onto todays tasks.

Yes, that's what I mean. You need to shut the door on the negative things, but there are some things you need to keep the door open on. Life's a series of lessons, right? So you're learning, as you learned in school... some of the stuff you learned in school, can be particularly useful in later life, but some of the lessons are pretty near useless, so you leave the door open on the valuable, useful lessons, and close the door on the useless ones. Hence, you better your future life. You can recall these lessons, or the results of them at any time to improve your experience in the subject. Just like life, those memories behind the open doors can be adapted to your current day, thus helping you improve yourself and gain a wider perspective all the time. If that doesn't happen, that lesson becomes useless to you, and you close the door on it. Comprenez?

Yes we have learnt things in the past but it is Today that we have them to use. We can only use what we have today and do things the best way we can and mke sure that we do them well. Even Today we will learn more to add to all the things we have achieved on all those days we concentrated on in the past.

Well said Deeeky. I was on my treadmill thinking about this very issue. It seems that I have been receiving everything I need just for the day. I'm learning to accept it and trust me the peace is worth it. Does that make sense? I'm always reminded that the children of Israel, when wandering through the desert, were given food from heaven on a daily basis. Just what they needed for that day. Anyway, great post.

Being on that treadmill is a great bonus because at the time of making yourself healthier new thoughts are flooding in to make the day organised on things that have to be done today and not left undone.

I quite agree with you.Tomorrow never comes. Now the thing we're doing is the most important thing and the people we're with is the most important people to us, as well as the current time. The past and the future are out of our control. We should face reality.
