There are so many funny believe that people have and have passed on from one generation to the other. I remember, the one in my culture that says “you don’t beat a male child with broom” of course I have seen male children beaten with brooms with no clear evidence of any negative consequence,do you also believe in superstitions? what superstitions are there in your culture that you know of?

These our ones passed down from my parents: 1. bad luck to walk uner a ladder 2. if a blackcat crosses your path its bad luck 3. bad luck to sing at the supper table 4. its bad luck to step over a broom. Its good luck to pickup a penny heads up.

These are the kind of superstitions that I was trying to think of as an example! These do make sense, as people can fall off ladders and hurt themselves and the person walking underneath it! Or maybe a can of paint will fall off and splatter all over you! Singing at the table can make you choke, even the other people could choke if there are loud noises while they are eating! The broom can trip you, well you can trip over the broom if you do try to step over it!

Oh yes, I definitely think so! I was told so many times that going outside with wet hair will get me sick, even with pneumonia! I love the future, cannot wait until more people are well-educated!

sometimes you discover that some of those things that are called superstitions are really not a kind of believe but a set of sayings that are meant to prevent us from doing certain things or sometimes to protect us,just like the examples you gave they are all aimed at protecting people, but there are certain issues that need to be completely dispelled, dont you think so?

I am not superstitious. I think they are funny. Old wives tales. My mother in law swore by many of these. One of them was that if your child had a hernia at the navel, you split a hickory tree (small one, I am sure lol) with it still growing. Split it far enough to be able to put large sticks, etc to prop it open, pass the baby through the split, take out the props and then tie the tree back together, by the time the tree has grown back together, the protruding navel will be gone. Also, who has heard about bole hives??? They gave a prefectly healthy baby strong catnip tea, it broke them out all over, and then they would not die from bole hives.

I do not believe in superstitions, but I a forever curious as to where and how they got started! I have never heard that one about a broom, but I did read a few books on the subject when I was a child. Very interesting, much of it started as an explanation for something that nobody really knew anything about! It was the equivalent of "why" something happens, and was repeated often so that perhaps others could prevent the same problem from happening to them!

Yes, so true, and I think it tells us something about other cultures as to what their superstitions are!

yes superstitions sometimes teach us about the way other people think and what they believe in so we can respect them for who they are but it doesnt really mean some of these things are true

now you may be very right about trying to prevent the re-occurrence of something that happened using superstitions, but really there are quite a lot that i also wish i can understand,i guess time will tell though

Another one I remembered my dad saying: "A whistling woman and a crowing hen, never come to no good end". And to all to the black cat crossing your path, you must turn your hat around and wear it backwards.

There are plenty of superstitious beliefs in our country. But I don't live my life by them. For instance, on the dining table, you're not allowed to move places. They say that you will be changing your husband or wife if you do. That's really funny. When a person is leaving the house while you are eating on the dining table, you're supposed to turn your plate around, so that the person won't get into any kind of accident. We have lots of superstitious beliefs that some people in the provinces still do live by with.
