Penalized by Google

For anyone who has or maintains a website, have you ever been penalized by Google? Here's what happened. My site has been up and running for about two years. I've done everything I could to make sure it is optimized for search engines, no spam, easy navigation, nice content, etc. All was going just fine for two years. My readership has been growing when all of a sudden...WHAM! Yesterday I found that Google dropped me like a hot potato. Although my site is still included in the Google index, no traffic at all came from Google searches (OUCH!) I don't understand what happened. Has this ever happened to you?
