A matter of Height

How tall are you? In the area you live is that considered tall, short or average? how about within your family - did your height exceed either of your parents, your siblings? What advantages and disadvantages arise from your height? ---- I am 70 inches which is considered tall in this country but not extraordinarily so. I am taller than my mother, but reached the same height as my father. My brother is slightly taller than me. Where I grew up the ethnicity was primarily Italian and I was awkwardly tall in comparison to the other gals in my classes. being shy, my height was a hindrance because I felt it made me "stand out" clothing was sometimes difficult to get in the correct lengths. over-all though, I am glad that I am tall. I had a doctor tell me I was statuesque when I was 14 years old, that was such a compliment to me.

i'm 5'4 not bad for a Filipina. in fact im the tallest in the family. im fine with my height. i wouldn't be comfortable if i'll be taller than that. tall people always gets the attention and people here will pressure you to pursue modelling if you're tall, they'll think your stupid if u didnt take advantage of your height.

isn't that funny? people used to assume I was good at basketball and I should have really taken it up as a sport - but truly in my height I am clumsy! not at all graceful. my mother used to tell me I was worse than a bull moose in a china cabinet when I was a kid.

When I was younger, I was 8ft 1 inch. My mother was 5'4" and my father 6Ft.1". I was the change of life baby and the only one of 2nd marriages of both my parents. My 3 girl siblings (fathers) were from 5'5" to 5'6". My 2 brothers (Mothers) were both 6'2", their late father was also tall. Others have said that my paternal grandmother was 5'10". My maternal grandmother was about 5'6" and both my grandfathers were about 5'9", so I evidently took my height from my paternal grandmother. But I am 66 yrs old now, and have been losing height for the last few years, which is normal the Dr. says. I am now about 5'6". I always like my tallness, since it helped carry my extra weight well. I have 8 grandchildren who range from 4'10" female to 6'3" male.

nana, that is a big range between heights in your family! I wonder what the first line was supposed to read in your answer... it says 8 ft 1 inch, I am thinking that was a typo. Was it supposed to be 6 foot 1 inch?

Oh mercy....I was 5ft 8 inches!!!! A BIG typo. Thanks for telling me about that. Yes, there was a big difference in all of us in height. Also in age. Since both my parents were married before and had children, they were all a lot older than me. Two of my sisters were grown and married before I was born. My mom was 39, my dad was 47 when I was born!!

hi modestah! in our country, here in the Philippines, 70 inches would be considered tall for females and slightly tall for males. ^__^ i'm only 5'2 and that's considered average here. but some people are telling me that i'm tall. i don't believe them. i think they are just fooled with what i wear because most of the times, i would wear clothes and shoes that would make me look taller. and my height is proportioned with my weight. as for the family, i am the shortest! .

I'm 5'4" which for a UK woman is considered to be roughly average height. I'm a tiny bit taller than my mum, my dad isn't particularly tall for a man (he's not short but he's not like 6' either!) but my brother is quite tall. I guess i'm an average height considering the rest of my family. Height has never been an issue for me, i don't feel too tall or too short, i just don't worry about it. Now weight on the other hand...maybe i'll leave that to another discussion! ;-)

I am 5ft. 1inch tall. I am considered pretty short in most countries I think. My mother was about 5ft 3 and dad was about 5ft 5 so I didnt out grow either of them. The real problem with clothing for me is I am curvacious so I have hips and a butt. My waste before pregnancy I could fit into little girls clothes but I have too much booty. Most other clothes are long on me so I have to either roll them or wear shoes with a heal.

Yep. My daughter I think is going to be much taller and bigger than me. She is only two and is in the 90th percentile in both her height and weight. She weighs what I did when I was 5!

I'm just a little over five feet and I am very much aware that I am short. I usually stand as 3rd from the smallest in my class . My father is short and my mother is a little shorter than my father. All of my siblings are taller than me. It's a good thing that I became taller than my mother, at least I'm not the smallest in the family . When I was younger, I always feel insecure about my height because I don't get noticed. But when I realize I have some talent and I always excel in school, I wasn't shy anymore. My classmates and teachers would always say "I'm small but terrible" and I would just smile. Despite my height, I don't know why most of my suitors are tall. The tallest one was 6'5", a basketball player in the university. My husband is much taller than me at 5'10". I think my daughter will be tall when she grows up because she's bigger than the other children of her age.

I am five feet three and five/eighth inches which is considered short average in my area. We live in a fairly mixed up area, with Dutch, Filipinos, English, French Canadians, Mennonite, Negro African (one family), and anything else you can think of. Why there might even be Martians here. After all, I live in Canada. When I grew up, it was in an English-Canadian and German-Canadian neighborhood, but I felt out of sorts, because I looked like my maternal grandmother who was part Welsh *the kind descended from the ancient Romans who fled the Saxons* I was short waisted and I could hot fit into the short Miss sizes who had long waists, but I could sure wear clothes that were made in Italy.

I am not tall. I only stand more or less 5 feet and 5 inches. We are really short in our family. And it is just normal in our country to have such height. I just think that it's not in the height, it's the brain and the heart that matter most.

and physiologically speaking, it is healthier for your heart when you are not very tall - as the heart does not have to work as much to pump blood from foot to head.

I'm 5'3" so I'm less than average for the US. My Mom was 5'3", too, but she has osteoporosis and has shrunk about 3 and a quarter inches. My Dad was 5'10". His father and brothers were all over 6 feet. Both my grandmothers were like 4'10" or 4'11". I have two daughters; one is 5' and the other is 5'7". lol Mutt and Jeff! I find being short somewhat of an obstacle. I can never reach the top shelves in the supermarket. I used to go looking for someone to help, but most of the time, I just find something long and start pulling things down! lol It's so aggravating! On the other hand, I enjoy it overall being shorter.

oh that must be a nuisance having to find someone to reach things off the upper shelves! so many things I guess I take for granted. ACtually, come to think of it, I am often asked "can you just reach that for me" it is always a pleasure to assist.

I am 17 years old & I am 59 inches. I've not grown in about 2 or 3 years, so doesn't look like I''l grow anymore. My mum is quite small & my dad is average. Most of my friends are average height, which is alot taller than me.

I have a relative who is just under five feet tall. she says that people tend to talk down to her like she is a little girl... yet she is a grown woman with nearly grown children. I think it must be a lot easier to be a woman that is slight on height, than a man though.

i am 158cm , which is a little short , now , i am living in the southern part of china , people who was born in south are usually short than the north ones , so when i am here , i am not so short , but if i am in northern part , i am a rather short girl .

isn't that interesting how the demographs change even in regards of height, from state to state. maybe it is like the Tennessee hills - and the colorado mountains

I'm 5 foot 6.5 i think haha :) it's a good height for me, kinda in between, i'm taller than my mum but around the same height as my sister and dad. also, my boyfriends over 6 foot so it works out well haha. i wear heels/flats, depending on my mood/if i'm going out... i don't really think about my height because i think it's kinda normal-ish in england, so i'm fine with it.

I am 173cms or 5'8" or 68 inches. I am now taller than my Dad. He is 95. I was taller than my mother and my two older sisters but my younger brother was/is taller than I. At school I was always the tallest and so stood out which was not good. I was always in the back row for photos. In later years at carnivals, I got to carry the school banner in marching squads...that was pretty cool. My mother was always onto me about putting my shoulders back and not slouching so I have good posture. I can reach things that are high up...very helpful for little old ladies in supermarkets. Being tall is preferable to being short in my opinion but trousers are never long enough.

I am 5'6" which seems to be average here. I have seen some really tall people and then some really short people too. My mom has shrunk...I think. My sister and I are the same height but her legs are shorter than mine.

I am 68 inches tall and sort of the same height as my mother, who is 67 inches. My older brother is a little over 6 feet, and my dad is 6'3". Where I live, I am considered to be average in height. Most of my relatives are primarily tall, and only a few of them are short.

I'm 5'6", which is about average for women in the UK I think. I'm taller than my mother and my sister, but shorter than my father. I'm also taller than both my grandmothers and aunts, but two of my cousins are taller than me. (but my uncle is around 6'4" and my father is only 5'11", so I think they inherited their height from their dad!) I'm very comfortable with my height. I can wear flat shoes and not look small, but I can wear heels and not look giantesque.
