do you still believe in beliefs?

i want to have a pet fish but my mother doesn't allow me to. i ask her why and she said that it is because of her belief that we can't have a pet that lives in the water. my father's job was a seaman. she said that that was one of the reasons that we shouldn't pet a fish. i feel sad about it. when my father called me, i ask him if he believe in that kind beliefs. he said that he don't know that kind of belief and he just heard it from me. now i'm confused. i don't even know if i was gonna believe it or not at all. should i pet a fish or not? and since here in mylot, we're all live from a different country, i also wanted to know what are some of your beliefs? do you even follow that kind of belief and why?
