It was a mystery for over 150 years. A Summarian cuniform tablet, that is. Here is a story that solves a mystery that crosses the boundaries of astronomy, geology, history, and archeology.

How about that? Gives you a lot of respect for the science of our ancestors long ago, doesn't it? I had no idea ancient astronomers were quite that good. Did you?

This is totally amazing. How did they know so much 4000 years ago. What intrigues me as well is the fact that civilizations progress to a certain point and then vanish or regress to primitive life and other civilizations rise and decline after a time. I wonder when our advanced civilization will become extinct or regress to the hunter and gather status, but come to think of it there would be nothing left to hunt and gather or anything to write down for future civilizations.

You raise an interesting question. Suppose a thousand years from now science and our culture devolve as oppossed to evolving into the science fiction fantacies we read about constantly? It surely could happen.

Well, there is no doubt that they had their science down.
There are enough things still standing that shows significant engineering and scientific knowledge such as the pyramids, Stonehenge, Mayan and Aztec ruins.... all of which demonstrate great knowledge.
I once saw a show where they claimed to have evidence that ancient Egyptian doctors were performing advanced surgery.
As to the astronomers... they were amazing in some of the things that they did.
Here in town, we can't get a good view of the sky... but once you get away from the lights of town the view is fantastic.
Can you imagine what that must have been like before electric lights, when they could look at the sky without interference?
They had a ringside seat..... Is it any wonder they were good?

Well, yes, it is a wonder to me. I would have thought they would be too busy just trying to stay alive. Yet, they had time to work out celestial tables, star charts, and etc.? Compared to the average person of today these ancients must have been exceptionally energetic and near geniuses to a larger degree than the population today.
