Do you know what crocodile tears are?
Where did that saying come from, unusual isn't it? Do you know the answer?
Have you ever cried crocodile tears?
What do you think of people who cry crocodile tears?
I find it hard to cry full stop and I certainly have never cried like a crocodile or had tears like a crocodiles, but I've never and thankfully seen a crocodile up close!
Can you turn on the waterworks just like a switch
Or can you do the crocodile tears?

I can cry easily - too emotional I guess sweetheart! Funny thing though is that I cannot cry crocodile tears, I have no idea why that is! I was always told that they were called crocodile tears as sometimes a crocodile looks like it is crying but it is really just a trick of the eyes! Not sure how true that is though - I was a very gullible child xxx

Physiologically, crocodile do shed tears like substance without any emotions involved. I don't know it's origin but it must have been observations of people who saw crocodiles secreting that substance while preying or eating their prey. Thus it became an expression of shedding tears where they aren't actually meant in the sense as we know it.
While there certainly are situation where I can't control my tears, I can't cry easily especially for my personal reasons. I get too busy in working and figuring out the solution to have time for crying.
The best examples of crocodile tears that I have ever seen in my life are with politicians. I get amazed, and amused too, on their ability to get into that mode when such a situation arises and it's hard for me to not laugh even when the situation is serious. I have a good record of controlling myself though!:-)

Hi wolfie.. As far as I know crocodile tears are fake and insincere form, people shed those tears to decieve people. According to Wikipedia that the origin of such expression comes from ancient anecdote that crocodiles weep in order to lure their prey or that they cry for victims they are eating.
NO, I havent and would never shed such tears I knew someone who did such thing to me and I hate the thought that I gave her a sympathy and my shoulder to cry on when in fact all she wept were just "crocodile tears."
Yeah I can easily cry on wolfie. Small stuff can makes me cry and even watching mushy movies can make me weep as if I am part of that movie. My boyfriend always tease me as a cry baby because small arguments or if I feel being neglected I cant help my tears not to fall.

Cried crocodile tears? Oh, yes. I have done it two days ago.
I needed the whole tissue box and more.
I can not start talking about, because I can cry over again.
It is about my very sick mother.
I try to keep myself busy, not to think about all the time.
I am going to travel in a few days to see her.

I guess I grew up on the moon, because for me crocodile tears are very real.
Now, I have learn that crocodile tears means "fake tears"
My tears are real. Maybe I shouldn't respond to this discussion.
Anyway, I didn't see crocodile cry, or crocodile in real world.

I have always thought 'crocodile tears' as being someone who is faking crying. I don't know if that is the exact definition but that is how I would use the expression.
As for turning them on an turning them off... I'm not one that can do that... I have to feel the sadness etc... for me to let it loose.
Thanks
Great question.

Hello dear wolfie. I find it hard for me to have crocodile's tears, but I think that I have seen some from others. In fact, it is not an easy job to have that kind of fake tears instead of sincere ones. Anyway it can arouse people's sympathy to some extent, I guess.

i don't find it hard to cry if the need arises. as in i feel emotionally touched by a certain event. but i find it almost impossible to cry crocodile tears. how can one cry when there is no emotional attachment at all? i don't think i can ever do it even if my life depends on it. or maybe i can if my life depends on it as i will be emotionally touched. lol

Sometimes it seems like I can turn on the tears at the flip of a switch. It takes very little to make me cry most of the time. My tears are genuine though.
Thinking about it now, I have cried less and less in the past year or so. I tend to cry when I get really really angry. I cry when I am proud too. Like watching my kids play sports chokes me up every time!
I have done the "crocodile tears" since I was a small child.
My daughter is good at them though!

It is a funny saying and I do not know where it comes from. It is a very unusual saying, I do not cry crocodile tears, never had a reason too, whenever I cry which is not very often, it is very much for real! I do not think I have seen an adult do crocodile tears, not off the top of my head anyway but I know my kids are excellent at it!! My daughter especially, she is a fast learner, watch out world thats all I can say.

I haven't seen crocodile tears either and don't wish to see them up close for that matter. Perhaps we could have asked Steve Irwin (before he got too close to a manta ray!!)
No I can't cry those type of tears. I didn't use to cry too easily but that got me all torn up inside so I found that it is better to let your emotions go (and as a girl I understand that this is easier than for men!) Now I cry at silly movies and even at sad endings in books - not sure that that really is an improvement :(

I've never even heard of Crocodile tears. I love getting on here and learning something new. I'm sure it won't be long before my son learns how to do this.
