What would you do?

How environmentally conscious are you? There is a new refrigerant that replaces the Freon for running the AC in your vehicle. The only problem is...you have to release the Freon to add the other. A shop or someone that knows how to do this safely is supposed to remove the Freon. I don't know how many people that I know have replaced their Freon themselves just by releasing it in the air. Which is bad for the environment as it adds to the depletion of the ozone layer. If they tell me they are replacing or have replaced the refrigerant I always ask how they removed the Freon? Most say..I just release it into the air..duh..then I ask them if they know....most say oh well...so what..blah blah blah..grrrr AND...the same with old paint. My mom was just tossing it in the trash without a thought..then I told her not to do that and why.. http://www.essortment.com/all/paintremoval_ryrp.htm She said she would start letting it dry before throwing away from then on...guess what??? I caught her doing it AGAIN! grrr So, I tried to shame her into understanding...her reasoning was.. I won't be alive by then, so what do I care? She also said one of her friends just throws her old paint away the same way so she can too! Do you know anyone else like this and if you do, do you speak to them about it? There are many ways we all can help our environment if we try. It seems that some just don't care enough about our planet to try. :( Do you have any stories to tell? What would you do if you heard or caught someone doing something that would harm the environment?

I would show her the results of pollution that are occurring today, as we speak, and inform her of the effects, like global warming! Education is the answer, only it is so slow that it seems as if some of us are living in the future, while others are still living in the past! It does anger me, and I try to show a good example. You can report people although she is your mother, so you may only want to teach her instead!

Oh, it angers me, too and she does have grandchildren that she should care enough about to want to not pollute the Earth. I do fuss at her and I think all of her old paint is gone now, but if I catch her again I will take all her paint myself so that she can't throw it away in the trash like that. Nope, I sure wouldn't want to have to visit my 78 year old mother in jail and she probably would never forgive me if I reported her..lol Thanks for the response!

You might be surprised how ignorant people in this country seem to be! I see examples of people who do not care or do not know better every day! Maybe it is best for you to check the cans before she puts them out on collection day! I have had to do that myself and it is a pain but better to help save the environment one trash can at a time! In my area, the trash is sorted through and she just might be fined since it would be obvious. Same thing for the dump here, they sort through everything!

And so they should, because people hide things that they want disposed of in the trash knowing full well they are not supposed to dispose of it in such a way. If our trash collectors see something they will remove it from the trash and leave it next to your can. I threw away a copper water pipe once not thinking..they took it out and threw it back in the yard. I had it laying on top of a box. Not even realizing that it was the lead solder and not the copper itself that was not acceptable. We learn as we go, I guess. Thanks for sharing :)
