I'm Old and I'm disgraceful

I have recently had a "significant" birthday and by my own standards of about 30 years ago, am what I would have called old, although by modern standards I don't think that I am at all. But I certainly don't feel it, and there is plenty of life in the old dog yet. I have at least another 30 years in me I hope and intend to live my life in a slightly less uptight way than I have done hitherto. I no longer have to impress anybody. I have climbed the corporate greasy pole and slid down again. I need a little money, but have no intention of making yet another million. I like to carouse with my friends and I have very naughty thoughts these days. I have my health and still stamina to look at my wife and say "shall we" (but it does take me all night to do what I used to do all night"). I am incredibly happy at becoming older. But am I alone. Are you going to grow old disgracefully too. Or would you like to put the clock back a few years.

I have a friend (he and his partner were actually visiting this weekend) who celebrated the same significant birthday this year and he insists he is going to be 49 again and again and again! lol The way he is going I will catch up to him in 11 years! I think I would like to grow old disgracefully - nothing wrong with being older and still flirting is there? I can see me at 70 (if I ever get that far) on a barstool drunk as a skunk and chatting up all the men while my other half is at home cooking the dinner! lol xxx

Go on spoil my fun why don't you? lol Flirting is very good for you as long as 2 people are secufre in their relationship - my other half has always known I am a flirt but that he can trust me - unless it is him I am flirting with - then he wants to know what I am after! lol xxx

Dancing on the tables maybe mummymo, but no being drunk on the barstools! I agree with P1ke, not a pretty sight. LOL I was in a bar once and the stools held a whole line up of ladies of a certain age all drunker than skunks. I came around the corner of the bar and knocked into one of the ladies (it was an accident, honest!) and she fell to the left into the one next to her, who fell to the left, etc. Before I knew it all four or five of the barflys had fallen over like dominos and I had to beat it out the back door before they untangled themselves and came after me for making them spill their drinks! I really am wicked. LOL

Don't do the drunk on the barstool Mummymo. I have seen any number of those and they are not a pretty sight. But flirting is good. My wife caught me tonight. I looked slightly embarrassed and she said "I'm not jealous". And she isn't. I think that counts as permission!! I love everything about aging so far. Mind you when the arthritis hits, maybe I shall be less amused.

Well, I think you already know my opinion on this subject. I'm going to grab ahold of either side of the doorway and they are going to have a h@ll of a time getting me to go through it. I'm going kicking and screaming, no graceful about it. I don't just want to put the clock back a few years, I want to stomp into pieces. LOL.

These days I walk around like I feel 100. My back is stiff, my legs and feet hurt from being on them all day. I need to invest in a good foot and back massager.

I look forward to hearing the screams from here. They say that you are as old as you feel. The great thing is that I can feel 20 and still have the energy to do things, or feel 100 and sit back and not move a muscle.

The confidence I have now makes me glad I am older. At one time I tried to be all things to all people and often didn't even know the real me. On the day I turned 40 I decided I was going to be me, act as I wanted and say what I was thinking. When I was younger I used to worry that people wouldn't like the real me but now I just think if people don't like me it's their loss. I tend to be tactless and sarcastic at times but also open and honest. I find many people like me as I am and I'm not really fussed about those who don't. Becoming older has given me so much more freedom to be who I am and not who others want me to be. It's great, I just wish I'd learned the lesson earlier.

Those are my sentiments exactly. I have tried being all things to all people and the only person to get upset was me. I don't go out of my way to be rude, far from it, but if someone doesn't like what they see, then that's their problem and not mine. Thank you Nanna.

P1ke, you are definitely not old, not in any sense of the word. And although sometimes I feel so creaky, I'm not old either. I intend to embrace each year that I'm given and run with it. Growing old gracefully is what I want to do,and I think, is what I'm doing. I use all the stuff that's made for anti-aging, facial stuff, and intend to keep on doing so, and I only use level 3 hair color, when I do color my hair, which isn't very often at all, and it's the kind that washes out after 30 shampoos and doesn't even cover the gray, so that's not much of an issue for me. I don't have a lot of gray anyway and the gray hair I've got, I've earned, by god. I think that our faces develop character, and the lines we get are badges of courage for sticking it out thus far. I've had so much fun in my life,and consider it to have been a life well lived to this point. And, I know that there's just so much more out there to live and experience and enjoy and love and lust after. I'm gonna do it! Bring 'em on!

Yes we will, very outrageously. I'll really be Maude then, won't I? I'll pose and you can do an ice sculpture of me! Think we could do that through video phone? Or will Spark bring me to England with her? Can you imagine that? I can, and it looks so very lovely. The three of us will grow old together, in our rocking chairs out on the porch, cocktails in hand, and the Beatles playing on the turntable.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

A ice sculpture! It gets chilly here but not that cold. But how can I resist. This book/ice cream store is going to be a heck of a place. Whose holding my cocktail? You weren't too explicit there. Unlike me. We are going to have fun though. You might want to move those rocking chairs indoors though, we only get about 2 months of outdoor rocking weather in a good year. Even then, what we lose in sun is made up by rain.

So how many times have you been told age is a state of mind? Huh? You are as old as you feel and it's disgraceful that you would feel old at the significant age of of whatever age you are now! Besides, it's all moot anyway. When I get to Jolly Old, I'll show you Jolly OLD! LOL

You are on your way to the airport as I type with, considering the time change from here to there. Sorry I missed you, but was chained to the house - literally! LOL Couldn't make the plane. *sigh, pout, sigh* But don't worry, after this weekend, things are heating up and moving faster than expected, so it won't be long if I can just find the key to the lock on these chains! LOL (metaphors are wonderful things, aren't they?)
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Funnily enough I was thinking of you and your jolly old intention earlier. I'm game if you are! LOL. Can hardly wait. Can't wait in fact. I'll be at the airport at 3pm. I expect to see you there!!

Although I would love to be able to put the clock back a few years that is never going to happen and so I guess I will have to stick with growing old disgracefully! I can be quite uptight, never used to be I think it is having children that has done that to me, trying to set a good example and that. I would like to find me again once they are all grown, I lost me somewhere over the years!
@p1kef1sh (45681)
5 Apr 08
You are still there Gemini I have no doubt. One of the thing about children is that suddenly one day they have all gone. They come back alright, when their washing needs doing, or they have run out of food or money, or all three. But there you are, just you and the person that is your partner and you have to start speaking again. In a meaningful way. That's the time to start having fun, and to heck with the children. I always say that my wife was my wife before anything else, and we are on a journey of rediscovery.

You're not old, by any meaning of the word! Besides, you're as young as you feel, and you've lived long enough to be entitled to take things a little more slowly, and make them last longer. My goodness, as you say, you have at least thirty more years in you yet, so whatever suits you, do it and enjoy it, I say! That goes for whatever age one is! Life is for living! Brightest Blessings, my friend.

Sounds intriguing. It makes you wonder when people around you the same age, are dropping. I went through that stage a few years back.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I know that I'm not really. Although an alarming number of friends have dropped off the perch in the last year or so. But absolutely, I intend to have an adventure. Quite what I don't know yet. But something.

I too could do with losing a few pounds. But look at this way, you are cuddly, and we all need a good cuddle from time time. Getting older is great from many perspectives, but obviously we become more susceptible to illness too. Live for today, because who knows what tomorrow will bring.

No way would I want to put the clock back I am very happy to be the age I am. The best thing about my last birthday was the council gave me a bus pass. I am no longer responsible for my children the tables are turned and they are becoming responsible for me and I am going to enjoy life to the full for whatever remains.
5 Apr 08
you sound a little bit younger than me, my children flew the nest ages ago now and we finished work early so like you we are looking for adventure now and to enjoy each day to the full
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I haven't got the bus pass yet, but the child is making very positive attempts to leave the nest. I have given up work as we know it and I am looking for adventure.

I have a birthday coming up in less than a month. I will only be 35 but I feel older. I have been through a lot in my life and I just feel old sometimes. Is 35 a milestone...oh yeah- let the countdown to 40 begin! Hey, at least I still look really young!!

I am 44 and i have a terrible mental affliction. my mind thinks i am 24 but the body acts like it is 64. if i have a good hellrising night out, it takes 3 days to recover. i think my cloathes are trendy and i am sexy. the young girls walk by me and smile, before throwing 10p for a cup of coffee at me. i need a realism pill. anybody got one?

I agree. No realism pill, Axle! Nothin wrong with your world, darlin. And you, sexy? Damn right!

I got so good at getting the girls to slap my face that I started to like it. All I was doing was trying to train my failing eyesight by closing one eye then the other alternately. They thought that I was winking at them! Realism pills. No. Stay in the fantasy world, more fun there

Ive had good careers...but i dont aspire anymore...to sum it up in a nutshell ...im just chuffed to little mintballs that im att he stage where I am now!!!Hallelujah!!!!!

As you can tell from your many responses you are not alone in feeling life can be as good or better as you get older. I think you have found your priorities in life and are making the most of them. I would never want to turn back the clock. I think I have not yet reached the best time of my life and I have much to look forward to. I feel sorry for people who dread getting old. It's not something to fear. If you try to stay fit and healthy you can go on enjoying life at any age.

It's not up to you,Everybody have to be old oneday.don't care how old you are,just be happy or make other happy. I found time is going faster than before after the age of 25.But it's not something dreadful, It happens when it should happen. If you're frustrated now. Learn to be satisfied.We should do something just to make ourselves content. Do what you want regardless of your age.

I will be 57 in a few days time, and on the whole I couldn't be happier. I see the angst my 18 year old daughter goes through and the misery she inflicts on her bold young suitors. I would not have that for a pension (will be needing one of those soon enough). The way they 'live' their lives these days via MSN, FaceBook and MySpace certainly would not suit. We have been happily married for 34 years and can't ait for her to move out. We intend to gro old disgracefully and have started to find places to do it. We went to a posh restaurant the other night and had a great meal. On retiring to the bar after the meal for a brandy we found a very rowdy party going on and there wasn't a face there under 40, I can tell you. We found after the owners of the joint are regarded as 'swingers' locally, and we can't ait for our next dinner there!
@p1kef1sh (45681)
7 Apr 08
We are doing that too although you are slightly nearer to the pension than me. My daughter set me up with a Facebook account so that i could look at my sister's holiday pics. I keep getting all sorts of odd messages related to it, but when I go there very little makes sense. Is it me? Glad that you found a good restaurant. The youngsters know how to drink, but they don't party like we do!!

I see your idea of life is about being there enjoying what comes your way and how it comes your way.I feel that you're absolutely right and that is what life is all about.I will love to grow old gracefully once I have accomplished all the goals I have set for myself and standards I have set for other people in my life too.I will turn 22 this year and I still feel that each day and each year bring a new set of things for me which I haven't known and I enjoy experiencing them everyday.Though there are times when I feel like going back to my childhood days where the only worry was to do the homework and trying hard not to get grounded.I will love to grow old because that too too hold a charm for me.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Make the most of your life because 22 was just a year or two ago in my mind. You will experience all sorts of things as yo age, some good some not so good. But learn from them all, they'll help you on your way.
