Virus killers and Spyware-Adware killers

I have tried several different ones over the years since we bought our computer. For a while I was using AVD or Avast virus protection. I have also used Spybot and other spyware/adware products. I have used most of this because they are free and seem to do a good job. But recently I have had problems which nearly killed my computer. I went to BestBuy to ask their opinion. I told them that when I searched for something such as Best Buy I would be taken to another site. He told me that once you get infected by a hijacker or adware, spyware or virus you have to reformat your drive and start over. He told me that he uses Kaspersky Internet Security and he considered it the best. I'm now using the trial version which has helped a lot but I still have a problem with trying to search for things. I figure this is ad or spyware that has not been found. What have you used and what do you think is the best software to kill adware/spyware and what do you think is the best virus program?

i don't know what would be the best anti-virus we can used. i tried many anti-virus so far like avg free edition, avast and avg spyware until a friend advise me to change my anti-virus to the new one name "nod32" it works for my computer but it will expire after 10 days because it is free so i need to uninstall and re install it again so it will be updated always on the internet but it you use this and install to your computer be sure to uninstall all anti-virus you have.

there is no perfect program out there for viruses because there are a lot of viruses out there in the internet being created every single day that virus scanner don't know what to do with them because they can't distinguish if they are virus or not. i would suggest that if you did not reformat your computer yet, you do it right away before malware takes over your computer and steals all your information and your identity. currently i think the best right now is kaspersky.

I agree with you. I really got a little irritated with the at the store cause I could not help but feel that he was trying to get work for the "geeks". Not for $200! He did say he only uses the Kaspersky. I have downloaded the trial version which helped a great deal but I still have something that is redirecting when I try to get info. I do like this program tho especially since it does not seem to slow down my computer the way that AVG and Avast do.I hope I dont have to reformat. My stepdaughter has a computer friend who said he would reformat my computer for a flat $50 instead of per hour. but I still hope I dont have to go that far. Thanks for your help.

I agree more with julyteen than with anyone else here; I'd put more stock in NOD32 than in Kaspersky. Kaspersky updates the fastest, but NOD32 has the best heuristics without too many false positives (AntiVir has the best heuristics of all, but too many false positives). There is too much polymorphic malware out there now to depend on signature updates; no one can keep up. NOD32 is most likely to catch a new parasite before it infects your machine, and is also one of the most resistant antimalware engines against termination by a hostile agent. The reason your Geek Squad friends recommend Kaspersky is because it's one of the better products they sell; NOD32 is only available online as far as I know: http://www.eset.com/ But again, there is so much polymorphic malware out there now that signature-based scanners (even those with the best heuristics) alone are not enough. I understand the three biggest names in PC security have implemented new measures to block drive-by downloads, which is when a parasite installs itself on your machine as you visit a compromised Web page. I can't say anything about the effectiveness of the new proactive components in Norton (Symantec) or PC-Cillin (Trend) at this time, but I have personally seen McAfee in action against drive-by attacks, and it really works. As long as you don't install a Trojan locally, it can keep your system 100% clean. Its heuristics can't touch those of NOD32, but Eset has yet to embrace the new "anti-drive-by" concept. Unless you have some noxious downloading habits, a good choice would be McAfee. Unless your system has been severely compromised, you shouldn't have to reinstall Windows. However, I can't tell you without seeing your system just how severe the attack you describe is. It may be as simple as a couple registry entries that didn't get deleted, and it may be as insidious as a rootkit. A professional (myself included) could get rid of something like this, but the problem is you don't always know how thorough an investigation is being performed. I understand that some news group conducted a comparative review a few months ago on three corporations which provide PC servicing. I don't know who the third company was, but two of them were Best Buy and Staples. Staples got a "B" score, and the other two bombed miserably (Best Buy made all the wrong diagnoses, and never even returned a phone call). If you're going to pay again to have your machine looked at, I'd recommend you take it to Staples. If you want to give it a shot yourself, I recommend scanning your system with these: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/housecall http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml http://www.ewido.net/en/ Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your very informative suggestions. I have tried a couple of things but I am still having a problem searching. I agree that Best Buy people like to push certain products. I recently tried a spyware/adware program that found more things. I'll try your suggestions. Thanks for your help.

Hi, You're very welcome. Really, the people at Best Buy have a job to do, and may get in trouble for directing customers away from their own products. If I worked at Best Buy, I would recommend McAfee myself, but few people know about ScriptScan. A lot of people don't think of McAfee as being the best. And if everyone had something like ScriptScan already, neither would I. Cheers!

No program is flawless, but Kaspersky and AVG are pretty good. For anti-spyware, try Adaware or AVG antispyware, and if you keep them as free programs, use Spyware Terminator for a realtime scanner.

Thanks for the info. I am just now hearing about AVG antispyware. I have used the AVG antivirus off and on between Avast. So far Kaspersky has been pretty good since I installed it's trial. I found a lot of stuff with CounterSpy trial and it found a lot of trojans.
