after watching an episode in oprah (puppy mills) last friday my husband and i thought of something on how we can take care of animals and save those who are being abused and neglected.
we used to be active in community service before but after moving too another country for 5yrs it is kinda hard to do it.
we did try to help setting up a library in one of the province in china and it is such an amazing feeling knowing you are helping little kids to learn and enjoy life despite poverty.
anyway, being a pet lover and owner we want to start a small one and hope to make a difference even to one life hoping it can grow.
i know there are ideas and advises online but i would like to know your thoughts about it.
do you know somebody who are into this kind of organization?
any help and advice is highly appreciated!
takecare!

Hi sweetie. I hope this helps. I was VP of a local animal rescue group for 3 years here. They are most definately non-profit so I can suggest some things to help. You are going to need volunteers, not just to help with the upkeep of the pets, but to go out and try to get pet shops involved. Some places, Wal-mart for example, will donate the bags of food that are ripped upon arrival to their store. Not just food, but cat litter. Most pet stores, will allow you to put up a bin for people to donate supplies. Pet Smart here has one for the group I am still involved in, the League for Animal Welfare, and they have one for the shelter also. They also allow you to bring the animals in from time to time to try to find them homes. If you can get people to donate old bedding and towels for the pets to have warm blankets to lay on, that is a big help too. You will also need to talk to local vets to see if any of them are willing to help with a low cost spay and neuter program. The LAW pays half and the pet owner pays half. You will also have to see if they will work with you on shots and such. Another thing is foster homes. Some people are willing to do this. It helps with young animals as they get potty trained and learn how to act around people and other pets. You will also have to determine just how much you are willing to do. The LAW would treat for heartworms. Highly contagious diseases such as feline leukemia they would have to put the cat down. They couldn't risk infecting the other animals. Then there are the adoption fees. We always upon taking an animal in would ask for a donation to help with expenses. We would then have the animal updated on it's shots, and if old enough, would have them spayed or neutered. As far as finding good homes, we always asked that if for any reason the new owners could not keep the pet, to bring it back, no questions asked. We would also ask if we could come by and check on the animal in it's new home. Generally, if someone is willing to do this, the pet will be getting a good home. Also, with dogs, we would ask if they had a fenced in yard. In other words, there are lots of things to think about. I don't know anything on getting you started, but I do hope this provides insight.

hello carolyn,
thanks so much with all the wonderful insights, it os very helpful i will keep and print it so i can have guidelines with me at hand.
i know some of it is very simple and really common sense but like most of us do, we forget and realized common sense is not always common, haha!
i am still in the process of thinking about it coz we dont know yet where we will live, i told him i want to live in the country area so we can have a better land just in case we will pursue this, i found a land that is 18 acre but it is way too far from his work (in case his boss says they have to meet at the office) and with the price of gas it is really something we are thinking hard.
i honestly dont know much people around here coz we are fairly new, i dont even have friends except my husband so i am still trying to fit in.
as i watch that show last friday (oprah) i can tell there is such a huge responsibility attached to such choice.
i dont mind really but i want to make sure i am really in to that coz i dont want to start and then close after realizing i cannot handle such thing.
i am planning to discuss this with my sister-in-law coz she knows so much about it and have many organizations that she is a member.
i still have to wait for the wake of her mom-in-law to discuss all this.
right now, i am trying to help this lady who stays with my mom coz she dont have no body to help her and back to my home town it is not something that others really care about.
most people call me a dreamer for wanting to help others coz i myself need help as well, i remember the time that i volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and my neighbors thinks im crazy coz i am helping others build a house when my family dont have our own.
oh well, i love the feeling of helping someone be it human or animal or nature.
nuf said,
thanks for all the advices it is very helpful and i am happy to know that you do have a wonderful heart to share not only to family, friends and animals but to stranger as well.
takecare!

If nothing else, you may want to just consider seeing if there is anything already in place in your area. They may need foster homes and workers.
Something else you may find helpful is that sometimes the local girl scout troops have gotten together and done a food drive for the organization. Some pet food companies have special fund raising set ups as well, by saving labels and such. And finally, recycling. We save cans and papers for the LAW. It all adds up. We even have little boxes set out here and there to collect spare change.
The biggest problem we had besides funds is people would sometimes just drop the pets they didn't want anymore, no name, no info, no donation. There isn't always room for another animal. If you do decide to do this, let me know. I wrote an article for the paper here once about the organization and I would be happy to let you use it.

First of all - what a nice thing to do, I rally respect that :)
Second - it's no problem for you and your husband to make a difference, you can just start working out of your home.
The problems start if you want to be registered as a "real" non-profit organization. This is a really hard thing to do, lots and lots of paperwork.

hello phlamingho!
thanks for the kind words.
we both have been part of community service so it is not a problem going out to help.
the thing is we would like to really make it a known non-profit organization so we can ask for others help too, we cannot do it on our own really so we would like to let others know about it.
we were thinking of having our own website but not sure if that is a good thing to do or not.
i have not yet read a lot of it on the net coz we just talk about it last night (seriously) so i am hoping that i can understand it further.
anyway, i appreciate your time to answer my post.
takecare!
