Is stem cell therapy right or wrong?

In my country Australia there is government debate and soon to be conscious vote on wether or not full stem cell therapy should be legal or not, I have a friend with a illness that maybe this type of research can help which tends to make me want these rules to change so he could have a shot at a healthy life. Does anyone share my view or do you disagree??

Stem Cell Research is a huge controversy here in the US. I usually stay away from this issue but it is hard because I know that this research could possibly lead to saving a lot of lives.
