Have you written a novel and struggled to get it published?

Letter from Poitou - Michael J Eardley's novel Letter from Poitou about the Eardleys and Audleys in the 14th century

I used to write a lot of science fiction and in my mind the stories and the writing were fair. I never had anything published though I did a lot of ahort stories and two novels. My wife suggested I change tack so I set out to write the story behind a local historical figure who turned out to be a remote ancestor. I did much of the research and writing while working as a bus driver so it was quite hard with the shifts. Looking back I suppose it took 5 years of research and writing. Then came the same old stuff about getting it to a publisher. One kept it a year and had it read twice - I was hopeful. But no, same old rejection in the end. However, I persisted and eventually I got it published by Publish America of Baltimore. The biggest thrill of my life was seeing a copy on the shelves of my local library. It's not going to make me rich but I have achieved a lifetime's ambition with this. Check it out and I'd be happy to get your opinions on the sample chapter www.letterfrompoitou.co.uk

I have just this minute finished reading this chapter after you posting earlier today, thoroughly enjoyed and am thinking about purchasing a copy from Amazon. I wasn't allowed to do history at school so I tend to pick up information these days from books and the history channel. Thank you for sharing with us and congratualtions of finally getting it published. A couple of my friends have self published which has proven to be quite a costly experience for them. Ellie :D

Wow Kimberley Gelderman gives a fantastic review on the amazon.co.uk site. Well done you, she says she anticipates more from you so you better get writing! I will order but have added to wish list for now as due a £16.00 voucher within next couple of weeks which will more than cover. Ellie :D

Publish America will take work from all over the world, I am from UK for example. Good Luck with that. Have you considered using lulu.com? They are well worth taking a look at.

Congratulations! It's an incredible achievement to get your work published. Have you ever heard of the Writer's Handbook? There's a new edition published every year and it's a step-by-step guide to getting published with all the latest updated resources. If you have heard of it then I apologise, if not then I hope it helps. You can also look for "feeder" websites for your short stories and articles. They don't pay you to publish, but they are perused by publishers and magazines who will pay you for the articles if they like what they see.
